I've been riding for a few years, have had a pony on share, and now have a pony on loan with view to buy. I've had a lot of experience with schooling, and got my present loan to improve and move up with my jumping. All this is going well, however, I have some issues with hacking out.

I did a bit of hacking when I had my share horse, and I went on a horse riding holiday where we hacked at speed, however I have had a few experiences with being bolted with. I am capable of pulling up in a schooling environment, yet seem uncapable when in an open field! I know a lot is down to experience, which I am working on, but I just wondered if anyone had any pointers or advice?

I am quite a light rider so often sitting hard in my seat doesn't seem to be enough on a strong horse!

Any advice welcome!

A mistake many people make when they're being tanked with is hauling on both reins at once (understandable reaction in a scary situation).

A more effective method is to use one rein only to pull the horse round in a circle, as tight as possible, and use the inside leg hard well back - a good kick - to disengage the hind quarters.

A little bit of both. For example, when an asked for canter turns into gallop, bringing them back to canter (not all of the time depending on the horse).

I try not to use both reigns at once, however thanks for the advice about pulling in a circle, this is something I have been told and will definitely try.
