my horse came in from the field with a tiny puncture wound 3 weeks ago, we poulticed it for a coulpe days but it was realy swollen stil so i got the vet out and hes been on antibiotics. a week later the leg was stil swollen and the wound stil oozing serum so the vet came out , sedated my horse and flushed the wound out and drained it before packing it up. he found a big pocket of serum in the wound and it was quite deep.

a week on from that and the horse is stil lame and the wound stil leaking serum and also looks like proud flesh starting to form. the horse is stil 2/10ths lame and the vet is now talking about a possible fracture/chipped bone/ foreign body and is giong to xray it.

but i would like to know the long term prognosis for my horse and how long he is likely to be out of action for? has anyone had a similar experience, how is your horse now and how did it heal?

thank you for any replies

As per my previous post my horse skinned his leg - we thought on wire but turns out he's been kicked by the other horse. He has a possible bone chip which, if he's still lame next week, we'll have xrays done. The vet said worst case scenario it'll take 3 weeks or so to get sorted - he'll just need it xraying and then the chip taken out.

Best of luck with yours.

Llwyncwn can tell you more about this pickwick. We had a foal on our yard that was suddenly very lame in the field and investigations only showed up 2 tiny puncture wounds at the bottom of the leg. Long story cut short - the vets think it was a blackthorn puncture that became poisoned and got into the tendon sheath. This was flushed out under GA twice but it failed to respond and the poor little man had to be pts on humane grounds. I do hope your ned makes a good recovery but I'd certainly insist that the vet tackles this very aggressively. x
