Hi all,

My tb pulled a shoe half off roughly two weeks ago and then promptly 'reshod' himself, with one of the clenches going in to his sole. Rang vet who reccomended I got the farrier to dig it out and then polticed but after little improvement i got the vet out too. He dug the hole out a lot more, so the was rough a 1cm diameter of sole visable. He also gave me some antibiotics and said to tub it twice a day. He also said to ring him in 5 days time to let him know how he's getting on.

5 days later, he was walking a bit better but still pretty lame and we decided to take him in to vets to have xray just to make sure theres no serious damage. Luckily there wasn't but vet did mention that he has got some proud flesh developing on his sole where the hole is. I should of asked more about that but at the time i was so relieved that there was no serious damage that I didn't.

That was 3 days ago, horse is now on antibiotics that I inject in to him (Cringe as im slightly needle phobic!) and its looking cleaner but the proud flesh has grown more, so much so that it is starting to protrude out the hole.

So, my question is....what is usually done about it? Will it go away on its own when the infection is gone or will it need to be removed by vet???

Many thanks and fresh cookies just out the oven for anyone who got this far..

Sorry to hear what your horse has done to himself- what a nightmare!

If it were my horse in the same situation I think I'd probably err on the side of caution and speak to the Vet, even if it's for advice- if it's proud flesh it may need removing or they might be able to give you something to get rid of it- I know on the skin you can get creams prescribed containing Copper Sulphate, but not sure about the feet- and as it's in the foot I don't think you can be too careful.

Hope you get it sorted and he's better soon though.

I had no idea proud flesh could grow in the sole of a hoof... I suppose it is a form of skin. though, interesting and good luck with this.

Thanks guys,

I think i'll give the vets a ring, I havn't really got any experience with proud flesh so think it's best to speak to a pro lol!

I'll try and get a photo of it later when I tub it again, it's kinda intresting in a gross way!

I had this happen the same way, horse had a hole in the sole and flesh grew through it. The vet told the farrier to pack it with copper sulphate crystals, plug it with cotton wool and a pad for one shoeing cycle. Worked a treat, when the shoe was refiitted without the pad, the hole was sealed.

I have a horse with proud flesh on his frog following a trauma - the vet is coming out to lop it off next week.

He told me to stop being such a wimp and do it myself but I dont like all the blood and he can sedate the horse!

Just after tubbing it this evening.

Our pony had this problem in one hoof and the vet gave (or rather, sold!) us copper sulphate crystals to pack in, which worked very well.

I haven't ever had proud flesh in the sole of the hoof but once had quite bad proud flesh develop over the pastern joint and used equaide. It was amazing stuff! Proud flesh was totally gone, and the flesh underneath was nice and pink and healing again overnight!
Never seen anything like it. Vet too was astounded. :D Not sure whether it would be of any use in your situation though

Excellant. I'm so poor atm its unreal so 'spose thats one good thing. Having two horses, both on box rest, both with expensive vet bills and both uninsured is not good for your health!!!
