my latest pup is now 7 months, those of you know me on here will know I have several border collies and am a very experienced dog owner. I wondered if anyone else has experienced anything at all like this though as Im now having to admit Im stumped!
Pup (bitch) came home at 10 weeks, perfectly healthy. We always crate train but noticed she was quite slow to dry up and seemed not to care about wetting her bed. We did the same with her as we have done with all 7 of our other dogs that we have had over the years with no problems, but although she will go for a poo outside, she never seemed able to hold her bladder for even as much as an hour.She isnt leaking or incontinent, she just goes. If she is out with me in the house, she will go anywhere and if she is in her crate she will go in it and then happily lie in it! Arrrgh !We tried a smaller crate/no bedding, cleaning with bio powder, trained her the same and more (!) than the others, but it was rapidly appararent it wasnt a 'training' issue as such, she also seemed to be drinking excessively.
So we went to the vets and at about 16-18 weeks discovered she had a urine infection. That was cleared up with antibiotics, but the behaviour didnt improved.Back to the vet some weeks later and was told she had juvenile vaginitis which would prob clear up after her first season and was probably causing the frequent urination. We came come again but I was still not happy about the amount she was drinking. I went back with her and saw another vet and insisted on tests and she has now had more urine testsand complete blood screens which were all negative, and then a day spent in the vets where they did a water deprivation test over 24 hours to check her intake and urine concentration. They said everything seemed to be functioning normally but agreed she was psychologically drinking too much so formulated a water intake plan for her over a 6 week period, where she goes from free access (was drinking about 2 litres a day!) down gradually to measured frequent drinks amounting to 1litre with the last before bedtime. We are now 3 weeks into this I thought I was seeing perhaps some vague improvement but now Im not so sure. She is still unable to go overnight (11pm-6am) without flooding her crate and I am still mopping up behind her several times a day.
We are about to go back to the vet but I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this? I suppose its still early days into the programme and she hasnt had a season yet so there is still the vaginitis to consider.
