Hi

I have a 6mth old curly coated retriever who has taken to eating her own poo.

She is a good weight and looks really healthy. She is the correct weight for her age and size and is up to date wormer wise.

People keep telling me she is missing something nutritionally, but I don't know what it could be or what she needs more of? Any one had anything similar?

Thanks

it is a very common thing in puppies.
They do normally grow out of it, however you can give them charcol biscuits and even tablets bought from pets at home.

But dont worry it is a very common thing....

Oh pineapple chucks also help!

Dont ask me why or how, just got adviced to try it when we had the same problems, it really works too.

OH's 8 month lab eats poo, although mostly from ruminants - Cows, Sheep and Horses. Fox poo is reserved for rolling in (or at least thinking about it - hose has discouraged him). Basically he seems to like the taste of it.

If you're feeding recommended quantities of a good brand dog food, she's unlikely to be missing anything.

Apparently feeding a small amount of pineapple is good discouragement, we didn't try for long as he is not particularly interested in his own poo, old cow pats taste so much better!

This is disgusting....and I have a pup who does it! ALL of my five dogs adore cat crap (I have to clean the cat litter tray out SO many times per day!), horse crap, chicken crap and rabbit crap, but one of my two Springer pups is the first dog I've owned that eats dog crap! It waits as the others are squatting to make a grab at what they've deposited.....GROSS! Vet laughed and said it's normal (told me they LOVE cat crap.....yes, I know!!) but I find it disgusting! Hopefully, she'll grow out of this revolting habit, but in the meantime, I just have to be vigilant!

Yes, I have 5 Siberian Huskies and a collie (need one dog that can be let off the lead!). All ate poo as youngsters, one before it even hit the ground (yuck). They grew out of it!! Eventually!!!

It's very common, both my bernese did it. My vet said that it was because they were not digesting their food properly so when it comes back out it is like re-heated dinner. (MMMmmm nice!!!) Once I changed them on to a premium diet they stopped instantly. (Oh and cat poo is just lollies to dogs...they luuuuurve it :-)
