sorry it's taken me ages to update, very long week and a very confusing one too.

Third vet agreed to xray and scan... (I literally had to ruddy beg them

He's got a small fracture to the scull and a cracked rib. Vet said akin to a 'blow to the head'. Hence the coughing (blood from his nose). Didnt explain the other things, but took him home as vet said wasnt much point in sticking plaster casts on...

Anyway, it's been a week now and we've watched close. We are now thinking he's maybe got his head trapped in the stairgate and panicked?? Sounds likely as he's a dog who panics to the extreme (remember this is a pup who managed to destroy the plastic floor of a Savic crate in a panic

yesterday witnessed this dog walk over to the oven and stick his forehead ON it (before could get to him to stop him) and burn himself.

Back to vets tomorrow for a checkup and to see if I have the world's most accident prone dog.

Poor little lad, hope he is improving now. He couldn'thave been kicked could he ,has he ever been out of your sight? Didn't you say he had developed a fear of going in the garden, something hasn't happened to the poor lad out there has it? I would have thought if he got stuck in the stair gate he would have done damage to his neck more than his ribs.
 
When we saw the first vet, on the night, they said he had swelling to the throat and bruising too. The bloodshot eyes, nosebleed etc... it does make sense..

He hadnt been out of our sight, except for that afternoon, he was shut safely in the flat with a stairgate to stop him getting from that room, the front door was locked and we were all out. Came back and he was like that. We don't have a garden, so all his buisness is done on the lead and he never leaves our sight. Vet asked that too... had he run off and been kicked or hit lightly by a car?? answer: no.

MIL's cat is here atm, and it's a bit of a sod in that it does 'tease' the dog by sitting by it's stairgate and staring at him (yet when the dog's loose he'll hide

) . Dog gets on really well with our cats but he and MIL's cat don't get on. Normally i'd shut the cats into one room whilst we're out but (and I can't remember) I may have accidently left them roaming? we'd gone out in a hurry... so there's a possibility he could have tried to get at MIL's cat?

That explains the head... but not the ribs, unless he panicked to the extreme?? vet said small dogs, especially him being a pup still, have delicate bones... ?
 
Charlie, tying all this up it really does sound as if someone has given him a boot.
Are you 100pc sure there was no time when someone could have had access to him? Even before you locked him in the flat?
It would only have taken a few seconds (think of the news story last week about the dog who was killed by one kick in the park)

I read your OP and MM's reply (and bearing in mind the suggestions of others on your previous post) it was like a lightbulb came on.
Sorry, just my opinion, haven't seen the dog and I don't know you, but that's just what occurred to me.

The stairgate - I've had bloody big dogs stuck in five bar gates (what? What do you mean I can't fit through?!), in pike fences (Don't. Ask) and they have always managed to wriggle free with no injuries

At his young age his bones will still be quite malleable - squeezing in and out of something wouldn't cause a huge amount of damage. A targeted or glancing blow would.
 
He hasnt left my sight.. the only time he isnt with me is when we go shopping. He comes on school runs with me (I wait outside the gates with him).

When the door is locked it's locked, no-one could get in. It's a deadlock. The ONLY people who have keys to this place are myself and OH. The dog isnt even alone with OH, not because I don't trust him but because OH is at work all day every day.

Even if he goes off the lead in the park, he stays close by. he's never left my sight outdoors. I'm 100% sure of that. If someone had kicked him how would he have bruising to his throat? and surely if the vet had thought he'd been kicked in the head then they'd have called in welfare or something? vet was quite content that he'd got his head stuck somehow.
 
Well if comeone could connect with a small dog's head with a big foot, they could also catch his throat as well, or, indeed, have stood on it or grabbed him by it.

I don't know what way vets operate in terms of reporting things so I can't comment on that.

But you said yourself that the vet said a 'blow to the head', and that's what set alarm bells ringing for me, taking all the other evidence into account.

For the record, I personally have never come across a dog with that sort of injury before and I have seen a hell of a lot of scrapes (including the time I went out to the garage and found my bitch under the tumble dryer

I've never seen anything like it either, and vets weren't as helpful as I'd have liked..

I've scratched my head all week wondering just how it could have happened but the only thing I can possibly conclude is the stairgate, and yes, even to me that seems far fatched. I just don't know what else could have happened

Could the rib have been an old injury? The vet didnt say, but would that explain him biting and growling when picked up?? I've had a few sleepless nights trying to work it out and feeling terrible for leaving him alone for that short time.
The vets parting words were 'don't worry too much, he's fine now'

I suppose knowing there's no lasting damage (hes back to his old self) is kind of good, i just wish i knew what happened..
 
Charlie, just another thought, and please don't take this the wrong way. Not sure how old your children are but one of them couldn't have been carrying him and dropped him accidentally could they? This happened to a friend , her 4 year old niece picked up her young pup and it wriggled and she dropped it onto a concrete floor. It caused a hairline fracture to the pups leg

Anyway as you say the main thing is he is fine now, although suspect cracked ribs will still be sore.
 
The children have been taught not to pick him up, so I can't see it myself, though it's something that did cross my mind, but...

he was 100% fine, bouncy happy normal before we went out, returned an hour later and found him like that.. so it had to be something that happened between us leaving him shut in and us returning an hour later. I always go to him first when i get in so i can take him out for a wee, so no-one went near him.

But yes, i know what kids are like, they do rough and tumble with him but that day eldest had been at my grandparents and youngest was out with us.

I suppose it'll always be a mystery, but am keeping an extra close eye on him.
 
Sorry if this is out of line its not meant to be but I can't help thinking of your previous problem with this pup when he would scream when with your OH? Can't remember the details but are you sure nothing happened then and /or since?

We all sent our best wishes to you and your pup and I for one am pleased he is making a recovery.

You are asking questions, we are making suggestions.

For what it's worth, my older bitch (tumble drier!!!) was not great with tall men, she arrived at nine months so we assumed something happened to her before then.
My OH loved her to bits and was very good with her, yet she was still spooky around him. Doesn't mean he actually did anything to her, (well, impossible when he lived 90 minutes away) but she had that association with tall men, it may be the same for your pup.

As you say, it will probably always be a mystery, hope he is back to his old self soon x
