he's five months old, a black lab, and very laid back, and has only really been so bad over the last few months. he is fed Auktury (sp) puppy/junior, has never tasted human food, and the only difference is that hubs used to soak it, then didn't, now does again. His poos are quite sloppy, either way, especially after the first offering. he's fully wormed, etc.

It's bad - a stinky fart every five minutes. We've been looking at charcoal tablets, but my gut feeling is the vet.

Any advice more than welcome - do i need to invest in a gas mask ?

Autarky is quite a good food, or it used to be when I used it ten years ago, is it wheat gluten free, the one you are feeding? He may be getting a little too much although he doesn't look fat in that pic.

He's quite skinny and leggy now tbh - I had thought about cutting it down (he had three small meals a day). But then again, he has absolutely no pup fat on him. This is our third black lab, and he is the stinkiest of the lot (put together).

Oh and it's definitely Percy - he has his own "unique smell" - as does Shy come to think of it.

I would consider changing his food in case it doesn't agree with him, especially as his first poo is quite sloppy. You could try charcoal Bonio bones to help with the gas.

Do you use advocate as a flea treatment? As that is also a wormer too so that can cause soft stools.

Some foods just dont suit some dogs. Does he scavenge when he is out? Eat dead rabbits or horse poo or anything like that. If so could just be this that is upsetting the guts or could have picked up campylobacter or giardia from something. Generally starve for 24 hours then small portions of easy to digest food e.g. Fish chicken or scrambled egg for a few days. If no better then poo sample to vet.

He's very good, he doesn't "dine out" - unlike our other labs, he ignores roadkill and stuff. i think trying a change of food is the way to go - would you suggest going onto the expensive ranges , have found that chappie complete is good for my old terrier ?

He has one of the special "anti gulp" bowls, for all the good it does with alab.

He can't be comfy, his insides must be churning - just done a massive one as i write - god it stinks

You could try Happy Tummy Charcoal maybe? its sort of graulated and is easy to deal with. We used to add it to the food of our kitten who had awful wind problems until she was about 5-6 months old at which time it sorted itself out

ETA - its really useful to have in the house just in case of digestive upsets for other pets too

You get out of them what you put into them!
Autarky contains:-

Chicken Meat Meal, Maize, Chicken Fat, Rice, Full Fat Linseed, Prairie Meal, Yeast, Peas, Alfalfa, Tomato, Carrot, Leek, Herbs, Manna Oligosaccharides,Blackcurrant Extract with EEC permitted anti oxidants: Mixed tocopherols, Vitamin C and Rosemary Extract.

The review on it :-
The first ingredient is a named meat product, in meal form. This is the sole meat product in the food. The second ingredient is maize (corn). Maize is a difficult to digest grain, of limited value in dog food products. It is also commonly associated with food allergies and is not an ingredient we consider to be of high quality.

Chicken fat is the third ingredient in the food. We note that research at Purdue University has identified fat in the top four ingredients of dry food as a factor increasing the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested. Rice and linseed (flaxseed) are good quality ingredients, but "prairie meal" is low quality. This ingredient is better known as corn or maize gluten meal, and is defined as that part of the commercial shelled corn that remains after the extraction of the larger portion of the starch, gluten, and term by the processes employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup. In plain English, the remains of corn after most of the nutritious bits have been removed. The food contains a small range of vegetables.

Overall, this product suffers from limited meat content and the use of mixed quality ingredients. A 3* rating is awarded, but this is probably amongst the lower rated in this class.

We have 17 dogs here (including two couple of Foxhound pups that will go back to the hunt) and they get fed nothing but raw meat.

I am not saying that these dogs do not fart because they do but it is seldom. Their poop is also firm and far less smelly.
As they get fed in chunks they never need their teeth cleaning nor their anal glands emptied.

Dogs are classed as omnivores but they are actually still carnivores. Their teeth are designed for meat eating and not for chewing vegetables and grains. More important their intestines are much shorter than an omnivore or herbivore so do not have the ability to gain the best from cereals.

If you want to feed a dry food then go for a higher quality one. One with a high meat content.

Just to also say that I have always fed raw and dogs in my family which number over 30, have all lived into their teens bar two. One was a GSD with a defective heart her prognosis was 3-4 years and she was PTS at nearly 12, the other was a rescue that had 18 months with my sister before developing lymphatic cancer and was PTS at only 3 years.

Have posted in dog room but just to say my lab is now on skinners- salmon and rice as needed fairly low protein but he hasn't been smelly since changing to this- and not too pricey. Raw doesn't suit mine at all very upset tummy even a small bone, he doesn't get any scraps due to this too.
On his previous food he was smelly too, also not a fat lab and has anti gulp bowl.

I swear by Protexin products for my horses and dogs (prokolin is the dog version). Soothes unhappy tummies very quickly. We always feed our pups on Eukanuba and rarely have any problems unless they have eaten something they shouldn't have! Give Protexin a google... Their products are amazing... My vet also swears by them and uses the products on his own dogs and used to use them for cattle when he was more involved with farming.

Our lab x used to fart really bad but we started putting natural yoghurt on his food and it really seemed to tone them down and lessen them. You can now tell when he hasn't had yoghurt!!

That list of ingredients doesnt sound good. I dont feed raw but in general the fewer ingredients and more protein vs carbohydrate the better. He is only 5 months so still needs to be on a puppy food. Which ever diet you change to make sure you change slowly - over 7 - 10 days or that in itself can caus diarrhoea.

wow, I can't thank you enough for these replies ! :)

Foxhunter, that message is great - I am soo picky about my horse's feed, but hubs is in charge of Percy and his dinner. I think it's time to go for something else, and I appreciate all the suggestions for other supplements too.

My elderly terrier thrives on James Wellbeloved (as long as I change the flavour every time).

Ok, off to have a look at foods. Thanks again.

Puppy food is a marketing myth.
