Haven't had a puppy for years - now the timing is bad. Why? Because new carpets due roughly when I'm hoping to get a puppy. So I need to ask what is the best way to get rid of the evidence of those 'little accidents' and does bitch pee leave a stain? If it's bad news I may have to delay getting the carpets. Mind you it's a nightmare trying to find the right dog - every time I think I've found my puppy someone warns me about the breeder even though they appear on Champdogs etc. Nearly bought a beautiful looking sprocker but common sense prevailed just in time as it would be too active for me at my time of life!

Crate training, a religious toilet break schedule (mine is out every 15 minutes after supervised play/cuddles, if no action then he goes in crate and out again in another 15 mins).

An enzyme cleaner (I use Nature's Miracle which I get from TkMaxx!) will get rid of any accidents.

Our puppy ruined our hall carpet so we replaced it with a wooden floor which is much more practical. Until they are trained they tend to do their business on carpet rather than other types of flooring. I found it impossible to totally remove the stains. We only have carpets upstairs now and she can't get up there due to a stair gate.

Thanks that all makes sense - I'm so out of practise.

how exciting! Pip is now 14 months old and we have moved house twice so touch wood the latest set of carpets is relatively stain free!

When training, we confined her to the kitchen (lino floor) using a stair gate. Not sure if it is the right method to use but we would also have one of those turtle mats in the living areas in the places where she might be most likely to have accidents - near the door etc - and that did save a few carpet episodes.

I'd delay the carpets too though - no need to make things more stressful than they have to be.

As Druid says , 15 minutes is the way to go, it doesn't take long at all to train them if you don't have any accidents. We have an interesting stain from puppy weeing while having a funny five minutes, it is a sort of arc!
I would get the carpets when pupu old enough to trust. :-)
