7 puppies have arrived this morning, so very excited! All seems well apart from the first puppy - its tail hasn't grown fully and it does not appear to have any specific genitalia?! All the rest are obviously boys or girls - this one just has what looks like a red flesh line from bottom to stomach - very healthy, but not quite rightAny ideas???

I always get the vet to check my bitch and pups within 24 hours of whelping. I am far to much of a wimp to check palates etc. my first born in the last (and only 2nd litter) was found to have ectopic ureters at 7 days old so I very sadly had her pts. Always sad to loose a little soul so young but you have to make the best choice for the pup.
Good luck with your litter

Glad it's not just me that has a post whelp check Satinbaze, we do seem to be on the minority. I get the vet to visit rather than take the bitch too, worth the money I feel to be sure everything is ok.

Vet is seeing them all at 8am tomorrow - which was the plan. The puppy in question has already had a poo so he does not want to see them as a matter of urgency!

Dobiegirl - I was just asking if anyone else had experienced this, a simple answer would have sufficed rather than a condescending comment! Now I remember why I stopped using this forum for many years!!

Thank you to the rest for your positive reinforcement and yes, it is a probability that we will have to have it pts - but that is, unfortunately, mother nature.

I've seen a grown up hermaphrodite and it was similar to what you describe. It was a small lab that my friends rescued. We fell out soon after, so I don't know what happened to it and it was a long time ago, but I don't remember it being desperately ill and they walked it with my dog.

Just to let you know, the puppy in question is doing very well - it seems that his penis has grown on the outside and at about 6/8 weeks he will have a small operation to put it back under the skin. As he has this inperfection and his tail has not grown fully, we will keep him.

On my.......ignore!

Hiya, my last dog had abnormally formed bits, a very short urethra, very open bladder neck, and his penis would get stuck either inside or outside his sheath so he had most of the sheath removed at about six weeks.
Reason I mention it is that it left him very open/prone to infection and he had multiple urinary tract infections throughout his life and that early abnormality was a sign of later health problems to come, so may be something you want to keep a close eye on as he gets older. Best of luck.
