I am going puppy shopping tomorrow (pets at home) - to buy a bed, toys etc - but wondered whether you should give puppies treats? And if so do they do special puppy ones? I am still unsure about the whole minefield of food but at the moment she is on Purina pro plan puppy so will keep on that for the time being - but wanted to use things as rewards etc - any advice welcome!! She is a patterdale terrier and I get her in a few weeks. Very excited!!

When my dog was a pup she got treats along with her training. She done good, got a little treat. It shouldn't be overdone though.

You can ask advice from the breeder or those in the shop. They should be able to help you with nutrition advice.

Good luck with your pup and make sure to post piccies of her!

I never treat my dogs/puppies through the day, but they are given a treat of a crunchy chewy morning and night. 1 when I first get up and they each get 2 at bedtime.

They do puppy treats, and as GinB says, i would use them along with training, not just for the sake of it.
Be careful too as most dogs, especially terriers can become fussy, and then you are going to get problems with feeding. I would get your pup eating well before you give too many treats, or his little belly will be full and he won't want his tea.
A treat at bedtime is a good idea, as he has something to do when alone which will take his focus off you not being there.
I give my 2 adult terriers, a treat each every mornig when i leave for work. They know the drill, and as soon as i go to their cupboard, they run and sit in their cage waiting.
Good luck with your new baby. Don't forget to post pics

Thank you - yes I did mean treats for training not just for looking sweetly at me (although I am sure it will be hard to resist!) Thank you - I will definitely post pics (if I can work out how to) am very excited about getting her!!!

Being a dog trainer/walker i would advise anyone with a new puppy to give it's normal dog food as treats..I give my 9 wk old JRT her normal dry puppy James W.B food when she has done something well i.e) learning to sit. They are none the wiser, they can't tell the difference at this age that it's their normal food, any food to them is good enough as generally they arn't fussy when this young.I personally wouldn't give a puppy these marketed puppy treats as most of them are full of rubbish- the equivilant to giving a small child sweets-it sends them v.hyper! I would however suggests toys that are aimed at those teething teeth! Bones that have rubber nodules all over keep them happy for hours and last longer than food treats.Good luck in finding a puppy.

Oh didn't realise you'd already found a puppy! I would recommend for your patterdale puppy the james wellbeloved puppy food as it lasts ages and is around £5.50 a bag,i got my puppy JRT at 3wks and she's now 9wks and i've only just started a new bag.My adult JRT is on the adult itchy skin one and it's been great for her condition. That bags also lasts her ages - 1 month for an adult terrier-not bad!

My puppy is JRT and is on puppy james welbeloved kibble and barf diet (JWB at breakfast and lunch and barf for supper) he's in fab condition and is extermely welbehaved. he's now apporaching 5 months old, is toilet trained, comes on command, sits, lies and is very loving dog. I never gave him marketed puppy treats, just JWB kibble or piece of chicken but plenty of praise and fuss is better than anything IMO. I believe in giving him the best close to being completely natrual as they should have ie having real meat.

He also had kong puppy chewing ball which he loves and still plays with it. I put the JWB kibble in it so he can enjoy that too.

Good luck training a patterdale! We have one, she is lovely, but a bit single minded, and the single mindedness is focussed on holes in the ground.
