My gsd bitch had pups 6 months ago, all went to lovely homes which i have kept in touch with, yesterday i had a email of one of them to ask if we would have her back {they were heart broken} there other dog has got a tumor and isnt up to the rough playing that the pup wants to do, they havent got the space to seperate them {which isnt fare on the pup} any way she is coming back to me wednesday, buying the pup back hasnt been mentioned which we dont want to do, but what if they ask for there money back when they drop her off, my husband wants to keep her, but i want to find her another home {free} we already have 4 gsds so i dont want another {we live on a smallholding so have the space} should she be gifted to me or should i buy her back????

What a shame, but well done for taking the pup back, and nice to hear of owners who choose to keep the older, sick dog rather than a pup (though not good for you obviously). On the couple of occasions I have done this I haven't given any money back , and in fairness the people in question didn't ask for it. It would be a different matter if there was something wrong with the pup of course, will be interested to see what other peoples replies are.

When Herman was returned (he was bought at 8 weeks then returned 2 days later as 'difficult' :cross: ) I think the breeder refunded her all her money bar deposit. IIRC the breeder said if we wanted to return him at any point within a year then she'd refund us according to how old he was/how well socialised/how trained etc but we wouldn't have got the full price we paid back at any point. If we'd had him over a year and wanted to return him then she wouldn't give us any money at all. (He is not and wasn't ever going to be returned but the option was there, if that makes sense.)

ETA: Agree with MM wrt to the current pup owners & you.

TBH, if I was the current pup owner, I'd be too upset about giving up my puppy to be bothered about a refund. I bet it isn't a decision they've taken lightly.

Yea thats different MM cos he was still a saleable pup and was returned with in 14days. All my puppies are contracted to be RETURNED in the event someone cant keep them at any stage in their lives, no mention of money.....I have only had one returned before, no they did not get any money back. MM is right in the event there was actually something wrong that was a hereditary prob or whatever then yes full or part refund.

Personally, I think they should be glad you're taking her back and personally, I think I'd keep her, she's had enough upheaval, she'll be confused enough as it is coming back then going off somewhere else bless her. I know its not YOUR fault, I've never been in this position, but if I had the room like you have then I don't think I could resist especially as you bred her, you know you want to keep her really :-)

So to clarify, no you shouldn't pay them for her, sad about their other dog but thats not your fault either

I don't think money should change hands in this case. You are taking back your pup so that eliminates further hassle/heartache for them in terms of advertising and vetting new home/s for her.

Good for you for being a respnsible breeder and i'm sure you'll find another great home if you aren't tempted to hold onto her yourself :p

{{{{vibes}}}} for their older dog too :(

Suzyqet on here is looking for a new GSD?

I'd be just happy to have her back, even for a short time, rather than her being moved on to an unknown future. As an owner I wouldn't ask for money back unless the pup was broken but had been sold as healthy for instance.

I received a contract stating I had to return my pup to the breeder if I couldn't keep him for any reason, and there is no mention of money on there as far as I can recall. To be honest I wouldn't expect any if I was forced to return him, I've always thought of it as a safety net for him if things go awry, nothing else. :)

we have a give back clause with all of ours, especially the terriers. And woe betide anyone who crosses that!

i would take the pup back, but wouldnt refund. would you sell it again or gift it to a new home?

Yes I am!!!! Thanks for the link to this thread and the other sites. Really appreciated.

Seriously, ameeyal, when you decide what to do, can you please, please, please pm me. Would be most grateful.

Just to pt a spanner in the works!

Arnie was sold at 9 weeks into a great home where he was much loved by the children (and he loves children) then unknown to us, at just over a year old, he was sold to someone else because the father really wanted a bitch!!!!!!!!!!!! Luckily, we found out about 4 months later; he was in a wonderful country home and much loved. Sadly, 6 weeks later we heard the new owner was seriously ill and having to move into town to be near his wife who was living in hospital. We fetched him back the next day but we insisted on paying him what he had paid for him (£120, he's a lurcher) as he had had him such a short time. The plan was originally to find him another home but he settled back into the gang as if he had never been away and we couldn't do it; he's still here, nearly 3 years later. Sadly his owner died within a month of us having him back but I don't regret giving him the money for one minute; I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Would the present owners be willing to have the pup back when the oldie has gone do you think; if so, would they be willing to pay you a retainer for its keep while it's with you? Otherwise, I'm as the others say, I wouldn't let it move on again now, I'm too soft!

When I got my pup I signed a contract saying amoung other thins that he had to be returned to his breeder if I couldn't keep him and that there would be NO refund.

How sad :O( I too was thinking the same as Maefsen, would you be willing to look after the dog until their poorly boy has passed away? would this be an option? That way you know that both dogs would have the best possible care and love xx

ps I wouldn't offer money either

When I returned my pup I was offered my money back - in fact, they offered my money back before I ever returned him. From their POV I dont think money was ever an issue - but the right home for their pup was - so its was never brought up or in question. Im my instance.
ETS he was a healthy pup etc etc
