I have a 12 week old Labx\huskie and he is almost house trained apart from at night. It has all been quite easy really.
But I have noticed that he has started to eat his own poo in the garden!

He has a good diet , plenty of exercise and toys to play with so I dont really understand why he is doing it ?? Will he grow out of it ?

What is he fed on?

Some people will tell you he has a dietary deficiency, others will tell you dogs just love eating stinking things.

I'd maybe keep him on a line when he is out in the garden (let it trail along the ground), if you see him going towards it or making the move to eat it, call him, try to get his attention, if not, at the point of him starting to eat it, say 'No!' or 'ah-ah!' or 'leave' either give a little tug on the line (not too hard as he is only a baby) and try and encourage him back to you.

You'll also need to be much quicker picking up after him - he can't eat what's not there.

Interesting mix, good luck with him! :)

Mine does it too. But she is doing it less and less now. I agree with picking it up but sometimes it is difficult to get there before they do LOL! I asked my vet about it and she said some dogs do it as pups, but more often bitches do it. She wasnt concerned.

There is one thing worse than a dog eating poo and that is a dog sicking up poo! Now that is bad...:D:D:D I speak from experience!;)

mine also grew out of it. i heard they also see you pick it up and try to copy you, but i'm not sure thats true!!

My GSD I used to have did it, it was gross if you didn't know he had, and he came over to give you a lick EWE he did stop. He died when he was 6 1/2, he had an enlarged spleen, they were going to remove it before it burst but when they xrayed him they found his heart was enlarged so wouldn't operate, he died a few weeks later.

I meant he stopped doing it, he died a few years later, looked funny when I re-read it

My dog is 7 this year and he still eats his own poo - it's unlikely to be a dietary problem, dogs can just be disgusting so don't worry.
We asked our vet about it and apparently it's just something some dogs do. Its especially hard to solve the problem when they eat it straight away so we've just left Keppel to it as you can't run around after them the whole time!
Pineapple is supposed to make them stop because of the taste, but Keppel refused to eat the pineapple anyway so it didn't work.

Im also of the it's basically a nice extra tasty meal, with a lovely strong smell and warm to boot:rolleyes: I do not believe it's any from of deficiency.
You do need to be vigilant and maybe lessen the space he defecates in and encourage it on a hard surface (easier to find and scoop it up) U could use a splash collar or water pistol and a " leave it " command to help deter.
