Ok..... before everyone gets excited / tells me I'm stupid for getting a puppy while B is still a baby...

My parents are picking up a 10 week old (I think) Rhodesian Ridgeback bitch pup. Although it has not been long at all since we lost our old ridgey, my parents think it is time to have a big dog back in the house. (I dont understand their logic.... the puppy is hardly going to put anyone off!)

I will of course post pics of her as soon as possible, my mum wants to call her Bo. I swiftly told my mother that if she spelt it Bo I would call the puppy body odour, or bobo the clown, so hopefully she will listen to her wise daughter and spell it Beau :)

My parents are borrowing Betsys crate for the day when they pick her up (I hope to god they pick a day when I am off work! Betsy is NOT trustworthy enough to have the run of my house!), the breeder is 3 hours away from us and my mum doesnt fancy holding onto a wriggling puppy for that long!

Sooo... I was a complete spiv, I bought a huuuuuuuge bag of JWB puppy kibble without reading the label. I read it last night to check how much madam should be having and it says she should be switched to adult at 6 months?? I havent had a puppy for a long time so cannot remember how long we had them on puppy food before we switched to adult but 6 months seems quite young??

Just need some of that magical AAD wisdom here :) Should I switch her onto JWB adult as recommended?? We still have 3/4 s of the big bag left, if Betsy is switched off it then my mum can have it for the puppy (Might stop them feeding bakers..... erghhhh) or it will go to a local rescue.

My posts always turn into a bit of a ramble.... sorry :D

I think you would be better at her age switching to a junior-to-adult mix if JWB do one.
Feed by eye and feed what you think is best - the back of a packet is not gospel.

For a large breed I would be giving her the best you can afford for her growth and bone development so JWB would be vastly preferable to Bakers.

PS having trained a female called Bo and own a dog called Bodo, might I recommend that you use a word like 'ah-ah' or similar as a deterrent, not 'NO' or the dog's head will be up her backside in no time :p

Haha thanks! My mother is a very 'AH - AHH DONT YOU DARE!' sort of gal, she even 'AH's at me if I swear infront of her!

Will switch her onto the junior kibble then, I was just checking the pack because madam started being a div and leaving her food to munch on at her disposal. I thought I was giving her too much but the pack says otherwise! Just nocked it down to 2 feeds now rather than 3 and she is much better with eating it all, probably because she is actually hungry!

I really dislike bakers, but it seems to be the only thing the old grumpy Border will eat, hense my parents feeding it. I'm gonna have a scout about online and see if I can get a sample of the JWB adult / skinners for him to try out. My mum can have my stash of puppy kibble.

Another thing... My parents dogs have always been kennelled in the day (max 4 hours) and were both left in the same kennel as they got along well. Grumpy old man is not going to enjoy being kennelled with a puppy. I suggested crate training the puppy to my parents but they want the dogs to be easily heard by anyone that wonders onto the property, so keeping the 'scary' dog inside is a bit silly.

Am I mad to consider crate training the old man? He is 14 and set in his ways, but i'm soft on him and it will be getting cold outside.....

I just want him to come live with me to be honest, but he is not getting on very well with little madam and I cant afford to rent anything as flashy as my parents house! I think he would turn his nose up at a yard rather than an acre of garden!

Parents do have another kennel that has not been in use for a long long time, so they can revert back to 2 kennels to seperate them!

Yeah, I'd say three meals would be way too much at her age - I'll say again, a packet is a packet, they've got food to sell, look at and listen to your own dog!

Skinners would be much better too.

Re the kennelling I would just use the spare kennel, bit much for him now at this age to show him a Brand New Way IMO :)

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but just wanted to say thanks Cavecanem for the point about names rhyming with 'No'. My in-laws have a six month old pup called Frodo and mentioned to us the other day that he seems a bit slow on the uptake regarding 'no' - now I know why this might be and am kicking myself for not thinking of it! Of course he could just be a wilful little so-and-so...

No worries - can you picture the scene, man is at his wits end, bitch won't come back to him, big fella over 6ft tall and built like the proverbial brick outhouse, towering above this dog going BO! COME! GOOD GIRL!
And then when she was doing something naughty, he was NO! BAD DOG!
She was sorta standing there in the park looking at him with her head cocked to one side...whaaaaaat?!

It was great fun getting the big fella to lighten up his voice and roll around on the floor to try and show her that coming back was fun :p got them sorted after about three sessions :D
