It'll soon be time for Tarka to go for walkies!!! Friday to be exact.

We've tried her with a lead on her normal collar and she's having none of it. She throws herself around and on the floor then grabs the lead in her mouth and tries to play tug of war.

So this morning we got her a halter. It's much better, she'll actually trot along next to you now. However, my poor OH is having difficulty getting her to stop grabbing the lead or standing up on her hind legs. Or will shoot backwards then twist to grab the lead.

She's just playing I know, and having a ball doing it, but it's not really what we intended!

I am trying my best to instruct, as I cant go and help too much as I'm quite poorly, and watching from the bedroom window.

But I really dont know what to advise.

What is the best way of getting her just to walk? I'm not expecting her to walk to heel, or anything like that. Just to walk without stopping and standing on her hind legs. Or going backwards, or grabbing the lead and playing tug?

Thankies xxx

I found my dog stopped doing this with age and a firm 'no!' As it's new to her she will want to play with it. My dog still gets so excited she grabs the lead to pull you forward towards the door to go for a walk. But as soon as she's outside she drops it. Although she got a new coat on Saturday and in her confusion rolled right over trying to get a look at it!

Personally I don't like the chest halters as I find if a dog pulls they end up walking and leaning heavily on their back legs.

Hey

Sorry to hear you not well

We haven't tried Finny with a collar but know that he'd dislike it... we have a halter for him and he's quite happy trotting around... however does 'plant' himself and place his bum down as if to say 'enough I ain't going any further' now with a collar he'd be pulling on his neck, whereas the haltie just adds a little pressure to his belly.

Not really sure what to suggest re getting her to walk on... however as Gina said a sharp 'No' will stop her chewing/jumping up...

Is there any other dog your OH can take with you/walk with - we have found this encourages Finn to go forwards as he wants top follow the other dog.

Good Luck . xx

Hi helen,

Try with some tasty treats that she likes. When she's walking nicely give her a treat, she may be a lot better when she does go out as there's more to see. If you can find someone to walk with that will help as they'll always follow another dog.

PS My money's on Tarka to win best puppy on LL dog show

Lol thankies!! There are some stunners on there though aren't there?

As you say when she's out she will hopefully be a lot better. Think I just hate having to watch rather than be out there doing it myself! And treats never fail to get a response, so we'll give that a go!

Ps do you know when the result are announced?

Yep any pressure around her neck, sent her into a fighting spin, there's no waywe'd get any where with that, just yet.

I'm hoping she'll follow the kids down the road actually. They count as doggies friends to her I think!

The piccies of Fin look gorgeous by the way!

I have found all pups do this. Our most recent addition did this, and we put her on a long line, then sat on the grass and played with her. We did this every day and she learnt that pressure meant come, we ignored spinning round etc.
I feel it is important that they can walk on a lead (if they ever get lost for example) and have found it relatively easy to teach.
I personally dislike harnesses as they just seem odd! (or is it a halter like a halti? I personally wouldn't use one of those either!)
