How old were your pups when they could make it through the night without peeing?

I have a 3 month old puppy who goes in the crate at night and yet he will have often done a big pee by the time I get down in the morning at 6.45 am. He goes to bed at around 10/10.30 and I always make sure he has a wee in the garden before bed.

I'm sure my other dog was making it through the night long before this! and a friend has a puppy that is 6 weeks younger and she has been making it through the night for a couple of weeks.

I don't think I have ever had a dog pee in its own bed, he absolutely stinks in the morning and pads the wet on his paws from one side of the kitchen to the back door when he goes out in the morning- I'm getting through a lot of kitchen roll! I clear up the mess with a spray that is supposed to get rid of the urine smell to discourage them from going again in the same spot.

Other then at night he has been such an easy puppy and has only had one accident in the house which was probably my fault as was yarning on the phone rather then paying attention to him standing by the door!

I'm going to suggest a really obvious solution: get up and let the poor lad out in the night! Last pup I had was popped in his crate about 11.30/12, then I got up at 4 every morning for weeks to let him out. He'll get there eventually, but being crated 10.30-6.45 is way too long at 3 months, IMO. He just can't hold it that long. Maybe some pups can, but this one obviously can't.

At 3 months I was setting my alarm for 2.00am to take Daisy out for a pee and then up again at 6.00am.

It's unrealistic to expect a 12 week old pup to hold its bladder for 8 hours.

At first we did wees at 12, 3, 4 and 6. Then by 10 weeks we had gone down to 12, 4 and 6 wich we did for a while longer. Hes a year old now and goes from 9,45 to 6.15 with no issues. I had him in a crate beside the bed so if he woke up he could wake me up.

We put 'puppy pads' in the crate overnight, until the pups were old enough to be able to control their bladders and then we realised that actually the presence of the pads was encouraging them to wee. There is no way that I would get up in the middle of the night to let a pup out regularly, in case it got into the habit.

We are putting pads down for Luna at the moment. I can hear her get ready on them, so can then take her in the garden. Yesterday evening we took her up the horses for the first time. She was with OH on lead, and just mooched about whilst I did my jobs, but she was knackered when we got home. Went to bed about half 10, and she didn't wake up until I got up at 5 this morning. First full night clean. She's just over 11 weeks.

I've obviously been very lucky with mine! Latest pup went to bed about midnight on first night here at 8 weeks old and slept through clean and dry to 5.30am when husband let her out. Then moved bedtime to 10-11pm, still clean and dry overnight and husband soon abandoned the idea of letting her out at 5.30am when she couldn't be faffed to get her bum at of bed! Other pup was similar at the same age. That said, they are all different and if a pup couldn't hold on as long I'd be getting up earlier to let them out as I don't want them getting into the habit of weeing indoors. But if situation wasn't improving after a while would consider getting a vet check done.

Reading responses I realise I have totally stuffed up the weeks to months conversion! He is 21 weeks so around 4 and half months old (I cant remember date of birth but I have counted back from when we got him!)

He is feed Millies Wolfheart dry food (cant remember the exact mix but it was in the 70% meat category), He is a Springer Spaniel. He has access to water at night but never drinks it.

We got him at 12/13 weeks and he made it through the night if he was in his crate but if allowed free in the kitchen with other dog he would pee in favourite spot, hence being put back in the crate.

ETA would have him out of crate and on puppy pads but puppy and older dog think that they are great fun to play tug of war with! I don't really have anywhere to put the other dog.

Are you saying he was initially dry overnight when crated but is now unable to hold overnight even if crated? If so definitely time for a vet check.

I agree, I would want a vet check in those circumstances.

Can you not put a pad in the crate with the pup and his bed, so that at least he is not paddling in wee?

Ah I did wonder about the maths when you said your friend essentially had a 6 week puppy that had been clean since 4 weeks!

I would think a vet check would be a good idea too.

Ok, so that makes a big difference. Mine (same breed) took a long time to be dry, but when confined to an area, dried up overnight by 3 months. Has he seen a vet for a check up? A urine dip is not terribly expensive. It may just be a habit he's got into.

She was with OH on lead, and just mooched about whilst I did my jobs, but she was knackered when we got home.

Doing anything different totally wiped my lot out, so yard visits were fabulous, as were trips to Pets at Home or just driving round with them. Even now, they are worn out by new walks or visitors, they're so sweet!

Properly tired!

There must be something wrong at that age unless it's just a habit.
My pup turns 16 weeks today. She came at 9 weeks, is crated at night and has always been clean. I go to bed at 11pm, the first few days I got up at 4am and gradually extended it . It is now 6 to 6.30 am. I think she would last longer but I hear her wake and start to fidget so I get down there and let her out.
I think you need to start again as if you have a tiny puppy. They can get in a habit of going in the wrong place. I have never been a fan of puppy pads. Puppies are intelligent enough to learn from the beginning that it's an outside only job!

Stanley is 14 weeks, came to us at 8 weeks and was clean and dry by the third night. He is crated but has an open door into a puppy play pen so he could come out and pee if he needed to rather than soil his bed. I also got up around 4.00 initially and over a few weeks extended it until now he gets up with OH around 07.00. He's on a raw diet and seems to drink very little water but pees every couple of hours during the day. He's a border terrier and I am told they can be a bit slow to house train but Stan has been brilliant and if he has an accident during the day(infrequent) it's always by the back door and because we haven't noticed that he wants to go out. I'd also get your dog checked out by the vet so you are confident it's a training issue rather than a health issue.

i have been very lucky, got my terrier pup at 9 weeks, he slept in a crate next to my bed to start with and most of the time would go all night with no problem, it was my fault if he couldnt as i sometimes cant go all night!!!!!! so when i got up i also took him out to the garden for a wee...he still sleeps in a crate but is downstairs and is a real sleepyhead in the mornings and i have to shove him out as i leave home at 7 to go and ride...so he has to go back in the crate to finish snoozing...

I think it's dog dependent. My puppy (border terrier X) could only go midnight to 05.30 until he was nearly 5 months old! OH did the evening shift and I did every morning. I was despaired. Thankfully because I did start by getting up in the night, he never actually learned to wet his bed, just howled and cried the house down when his bladder was full! And then like a switch at ~ 5.5 months he suddenly could go from 10.30 to 07.00 no problem, although he likes to go out around midnight when possible. He also only does a wee 2-3 times a day suddenly. He'd probably hold longer overnight but I see no reason to expect that of him. He's now 7 months old so I am enjoying the sleep!

I am unable to drive at the moment so puppy is booked into vet next week when I can get a lift. However since posting this he has not had a wee at night.

I think he has logged on to HHO and been reading how other puppies have make it through the night! He is also paying me back for saying that he is good in the day, yesterday we had 2 wees and a poop inside! Either that or he doesn't fancy going outside in this weather!

Either that or he doesn't fancy going outside in this weather!

My boy took a while to wee out in the rain. He'd stand outside miserably under an umbrella with me and wouldn't go for ages. He soon learned the only way out of the rain was to do a little wee! My older dog pretends to do a wee sometimes. She squats when I tell her to wee and then runs back to the house. She can go from 6pm to 8am without needing a wee though (entirely her choice!)

Aled doesn't like the rain, if we're out walking when it starts, he will actively turn towards home. He will also wait as long as he can, run in the garden, do his business and be back in again.

Luna doesn't mind the rain, she can't be walked out until Monday, but is quite happy out in the garden in it. She is almost 100% house trained now. Only issue we seem to have at the moment is, if we go out, be it 15mins or an hour, she gets very excited when we come in and will wet herself.

TheresaW - when you come in don't acknowledge her at all or even look at her, just scoop her up and out the door. It is hard if they have heard the car coming but you have to be in stealth mode!!
