Hi all,

I have a 4 month old puppy who i am having huge problems with toilet training. I have a 3 year old Weimaraner and a 2 year old Vizsla, i had no issues, I crate trained them both. They have their own area (a coal house type area off the kitchen about 4mt x 2mt, insulated for winter/window for summer) lots of beds toys so are quite happy out there, they sleep there and stay there whilst i work, 8.30am - 2.15pm each day. Every day i come home he has wee-ed and poo-ed at least twice... I don't know what to do, he had a bad start as we had builders in when he was 8 weeks old so we couldn't get in a routine properly so it's not exactly his fault. I still have the crate and want to put it back in but he is attched to the hip of his dad, the viz, do you think this would work or do you think he would howl constantly? I would put the crate right next to them, i know i should of done this from the start really but i've just not done too well. he has his breakie at 5.45am and comes up the stables with me at 6am every morning and has over an hour running about so plenty of time to poop. What would you do?

Thanks

Accept that at 4 months you still got a long way to go......

Do you think i should use the crate though or just let him be and hope he is going as he can't hold it rather than a bad habbit he's getting into...my 2 were toilet trained by 3 months this is why i'm

At fours month old, his bladder and bowels are still too small to contain any waste for nearly 6 hours. He's soiling because he has too! Either you paper train or crate train, with someone popping in and letting him outside a couple times whilst you are at work.:)

He is paper trained, has been since about 6 weeks old. I'll go back to that i think that would be better . Am i correct in thinking that its 1 month for 1 hr type rule? it just threw me as he's goes to bed at 11pm gets up about 5.30am and no accidents :-? well 9/10 times anyway, seems to be just when i go to work and they are pretty much with me all other times. :)

I don't know about a rule, at four months though I wouldn't expect a pup to be able to hold on for six hours. I would take pup outside after waking and meals and probably every 2 hours throughout the day.:)

6 hours is along time for such a young pup, esp when a meal is fed early on. I would certainly introduce the crate but he needs atleast 1 break in those hours.
It could be carrying on with this routine he will stay semi toilet trained due to habit so I would definatley introduce a crate.

Ok thankyou for all your advice! I just thought it was due to me messing up his routine training a bit when he was young. On a huge plus I came home on Friday after writting this to a clean place.... I was very happy!!! :-)
