Puppy price?

I'm doing a bit of reseach as to the cost of buying a puppy. I'm particularly interested in a couple of breeds
A) whippets - believe they are around £400

and

B) norfolk terriers - what I've found have been £950

is this right can anyone tell me????

I believe that the Norfolk terrier is a "rare" breed if that's the right terminology but want to check that this is the sort of price that pups are fetching.

I know that alot of people who breed say that if you can't afford the purchase price then you shouldn't be buying a pup anyway ( as they do question whether you have the funds to look after a pup long term ) but there is a substantial difference between £400 and £950.

(I apologise if my comments have unintentionally offended any breeders here they are only comments that I have heard from a minority.)

I'm going to be looking for a breed that will travel round with me but be pretty "sedate" (not the right word to discribe what I mean really!)

as he wouldn't split the brothers up but he was perfect, although a terrier he was quiet natured and loyal and just wanted to be near you. That's the sort of thing I'm looking for but suppose really it's more down to individual dog than specific breed?

Forgot to say, I looked into Norfolks as I had a norfolk cross who was lovely. The prices seemed to be around the £800 mark.

I have a basset and I paid £750 for him.

Also have a rescue greyhound who IS laid back and she cost me £50!
 
Whippets are aparently according to P_G and GM a little on the CRATZY side lol

I have a retired greyhound who zooms around for 10 minutes and then spends the rest of the day sleeping. Fab dogs the best £100 I have ever spent. They do steal though lol so keep all food out of reach. Another thing I would do what ever you get GET IT INSURED!

Can't say about Whippeties but that price is about right for a Norfolk; apparantly, they are notoriously bad breeders or seem to have a lot of troubles so it's rarity value, I suppose that's why. Like Piaffe, we sold our litter of Bassets for £750 (well, one seems to have stayed somehow, Weasel says she's going nowhere!

What you described as wanting sounds like an awful lot of lurchers I know!

They just want to be where you are, don't need a great deal of exercise and if you have one from a pup you can easily stop the stealing lark - ours know it's more than their life's worth to even think about pinching anything, even if it is mouth height!

Very loyal, loving dogs if you get the right mix, we wouldn't be without ours.

if you want a gorgous dog to travel round with a bedlington whippet cross would suit. Our little lady is 5 months old now, will go crazy mad for half an hour - then sleep for several. She is gentle and extremely loving and will travel miles just curled up on the passenger seat. Perfect for me travelling around saddle fitting

they are meant to, however its not the case with mine! (and GMs).

For example, mum took her to the vets on monday for her annual injection (shes a year and 3months) and she got so excited in the waiting room that the receptionist thought it was best she waited in a room on her own!! The vet then proceeded to comment on how hes 'never seen one quite like her before' whilst she bounced around his room and tried to lick him to death

They are MEANT to be docile, but shes just an 'odd' one!

Oh, and you should see her off the lead, Piaffe will vouch for me in that shes BL00DY quick!!!!!!

[/ QUOTE ] Ditto to all that - our lurcher is the best dog I've ever have and, having reared her from a pup she wouldn't dream of stealing either!

As for whippets, my friend had a lovely whippet and he was definitely the laid back type!
 
My whippet is the best companion, she comes everywhere with us. She does have a mad half hour then sleeps it off for the next 23.5 hours. She loves coming in the lorry, she rides quads and horses with us!! Most that I have met are very similar in the fact they are very loving and sweet little dogs!! Go for a whippet, you wont regret it!!!
 
Think the whippets have got the nod so far. I bit the bullet and called an ad for some Norfolk terrier pups, they were £950. Apparently they only have about 2-4 pups and many need C-section births that's the reason for the price, which is fair enough.

Does anyone know the term for the slate blue colour of whippets? I'd like a solid colour one or a mix of that and white

I agre that whippets are fantastic, I had a little blue one, lost her last year to cancer, she was stunning!! I have had every colour currently got fawn and black, I rescued all mine so did not pay for any of them..... My little blue whippet cost the previous owners £1200 as she was a very expensive racing whippet...... She was hit by a car after leaving the stadium from her first race and suffered a broken pelvis..... My mams a vet nurse and she brought her home, cos the owners could no longer use her for racing. LUCKY for me i kept her and had her 12 years and she was the best little dog i ever had

£200 For my Jack Russel terrier.... he's a theif, cocky little sod, very dominated, moults all the time, barks all the time But not all true... he's adorable little boy who loves going in my car and travels with me... it won't be long before he gets his passport to travel abroad.

But i Reckon Whippets are perfect too...
 
Thank you for the offer but although I'd love a dog I'm not in a position to have one at the moment. I'm just doing my reseach re breeds and cost etc.

Unfortunately although I think the Norfolk terrier breed sound fab I can't stretch to nearly £1000 for a pup so don't think I'll be getting one even when I am able to have a dog

I paid £250 for a pedigree schnauzer with papers. Uncle paid £150 for his lab without papers (she has produced two damn good litters) then again he paid a huge amount more for his lab dog
 
i wouldn't know... all JRTs in south of england are around that price. So pretty much normal price around here.

He came from working ratting family. and bred in family home (not proper breeders)
he got Damn good nose... can sniff out and caught mouse! and he was only 4 months old then!!! he's now 5 months!!!

Ah he sounds dead cute! Catching his first mouse so young..bless! This wee guy came from a farmer who breed JRs. Maybe it was a bargain! No idea if his parents worked.

I suppose when you don't pay alot for a dog and they are just the greatest it makes you a little bit loathed to fork out much in future!
I paid £350 for a lab pup and she was mental my brother had to take her as he had more time and could work her far more than I could. She's turned out fine for him as a working gun dog but boy did she take some training

That's why I'm looking into the different breeds and their temperaments etc before I even start looking at pups. Like Dachshunds too and used to work at a yard that had 2 but again the price is too much.
 
I have a rescue lurcher, grey x lab and she is fab. Only 6 months but so layed back and very intelligent. Yes she does steal, thats the grey in her. but wouldn't be without her for a second. She cost me £95 and would pay 10 times that for her xx

Norfolk terriers only had about 600 registered so they will be more expensive but it also depends on the parentage etc on how expensive they will be.

Unregistered pups *should* be cheaper, so your crosses etc. My most favourite dog only cost £50, but our current dog who was a particular choice was considerably more expensive.
