Puppy viewings; any help please?

Hi all,

Its been a long time since we have viewed pedigree pups, current doglet is a crossbreed we got for 50 quid from a neighbour (And the best dog ive ever owned)

Before anyone screams at me rescue... we would, but tried and im totally sick of the blanket rules that the ones here state. We also need a puppy for our dog to accept him. (i know i shouldnt have to explain myself but still....)

Were viewing some KC reg pups tomorow, and im wondering about papers... its not essential but i do believe in health tests - how do i check these? what do i look for on the papers?

Pups are only an hour away and theres a 99.99% chance of us bringing one home tomorow...:rolleyes: (and before anyone jumps on me, its been around 2 years of thinking about adding to the family and the time is finally right).

It the pups are ready to go then their registration papers should be there. If the parents are health tested this should show on the certificates after the parents name. If you have a look on the following link and scroll down to springers you can see the required health tests for Assured Breeders, even if the breeder is not an AB I would want to see most of these tests done with good results.

our last pedigree dogs were "proper" farm collies with ISDS papers and not a lot else :)

So this KC reg thing is all new to me! :D
 
springers :D

I want a collie but i think they have masses more energy than the spaniels?

We have had both now, our male dog seemed really chilled out (collie) but we dont feel that its a wise move with a collie/working :(
 
Ah nice!! I have a 10 month sprocker puppy - he's ace and so well behaved (most of the time), he can be very hyper but is easily calmed! Had a collie also, lovely dogs, my favourite breed but need so much walking and stimulation to keep them sane - mine was such a wonderful family dog but we had to walk her for a good 2 hours min a day!

exactly :) gutting really as i love the breed but it wouldnt be fair!

I know springers are slightly bonkers and need lots of exercise but i dont find them as n your face as collies?

Pics are a must and will be when i get one :)
 
Think it really depends on the dog, oaks mum and sister (both pure bred springers) are really in your face type dogs, never leave you alone but will go away if you send them. Wheras collies IMO can question you and you have to tell them again (then there back in your face 5 mins later)! If this pup viewing doesn't go to plan, Oaks sister is pregnant (sprocker puppies) and is due in a month or so.. She always has some lovely puppy's. :)

I hope you mean Oaks sister from a previous litter.:confused:

sounds bad but the pup is almost needed sooner rather than later!....current dog is physically shaking when we go out as shes so down about being alone :(

Bring her a friend to play with and she lights up....

we just havent had the time for another pup realistically until now.

MM- god no! Of course I mean from a previous litter! She's now 3/4 years old! .. It's the mother of twiglets Rosie on here.. (I think that's her username). :)

its my mums dog *technically*.... although ive picked the breed ( :D ) and rung the breeders (who is a KC accredited breeder btw and i can see 3 generations tomorow)! :) im paying halves for the pup. Dog is going in her name and shes picking his name :)



Roll in tomorow. I have 2 weeks off work, 1 week of it myself and my mum are off which is perfect for bringing a pup home

fingers crossed this all works out

However, if you cannot fall in love with a springer puppy..........theres no hope :D
 
If they are an assured breeder you should be shown proof that all the tests mentioned in my link above are done with good results. Good luck with the viewing.:)
 
How many have you got to choose from? Will the breeder be guiding your choice or is it entirely your choice? Personally, I prefer a quieter, calmer dog and I chose this when we got our two year olds. He is non stop when out, but brilliant in the house. I had the pick of 7 boys, I think.

Handle them as much as you're allowed and let the breeder guide you depending on what you want.

Ask Cayla for the puppy guide and get a crate for the sake of the older dog and the pup and to save your furniture.

Do ask any questions and expect to be up for wees every couple of hours for the first few weeks. Some people sleep downstairs til the pup is settled.

with this breeder theres 2 to choose from - theres another breeder with 4 which are lovely and im utterly tempted to actually go have a choice of 4.....(all boys)!

Im absolutely torn.

Im not bothered about looks....i just want a nice healthy springer..! who is best mates with my dog. (hopefully!)


What to do....???

both are KC reg - one breeder is on the KC register, others not but still dogs are fully health tested but tomorows i can see the b..ch, her dam and the sire... (Which goes massivly in my book)!

Experienced views please?
 
By the KC register do you mean the Assured Breeders scheme, this should give you more chance of having a healthy pup but is by no means guaranteed.
Are parents of the other litter KC registered as well, if so you should be able to check they are health tested (pm me the names if you prefer and I will have a look).
I know it sounds a bit crazy but if the breeder has the sire as well it is not always a good thing. Most breeders will like to introduce new lines to improve their stock, not just use their own dog, so is worth checking if he has been used by other breeders or just by his owners, always a good guide.
I would go and see both litters and hard as it is don't make an impulse decision, come away and think about it. However, if you do decide to do this please don't go straight from one litter to the next. It is every breeders nightmare when someone is sitting playing with your pups and casually says they have just been at another kennel, just not worth the risk of infection.
