What are the thoughts/rules for walking pup's?

i.e how long do you start off by doing and how much do you increase the amount of time out in terms of the growing bones etc?

Puppy is 13 weeks old GSD. Got his final jabs last week so we can start taking him out now.

We have a field by the side of the house which we have took him on for 10 minutes at a time several times a day so far.

5 minutes on lead per month of age is the rule of thumb. Keep him entertained by training and taking him everywhere possible. Don't let him do stairs or jump on furniture, I remember someone on here saying GSDs have sloppy hocks as youngsters, so be careful with anything that might impact his joints.

Thank you that's helpful.

Its my mums dog and unfortunately he does sleep upstairs and tends to go up with her during the day if she goes up (my mums disabled so he sneaks up while she is on the stair lift) and he has started getting silly jumping on the settee...I shall pass this information on!

Agree with this ...
Plus just going up the stairs to bed and down in the morning is ok...it is stopping him continually running up and down the stairs that is important, especially downwards as this does impact heavily on the joints. I like to put mine on a lead to go up the stairs to bed ,when they are pups ,as this keeps things under control.
I also keep the stairgates on until at least a year.

I've got a 5 month lab and my vet has recommended not to let her jump in and out of cars and not to take her on long walks until she is at least a year old because labs can have dodgy joints....A cod-liver oil tablet a day is good for joints and a shiny coat!
