hi i was just wondering is it true that you can buy pups in petshops in the uk?

im from the roi so have never seen any in a shop down here do it
However at the minute there is controversy going on because one of the largest puppy farms down here
(and i mean large 700 bitches,300 pups)

is suspected of having canine brucellosis(which can be transferred to ppl) and it hasnt been quarintined yet even tho it exports hugh amounts of pups seemingly to petshops and dealers in the uk and on the continent..
just curious to no does anyone no of shops that sell pups like that?
how do they stop stuff like this spreading?
or is it just pure sell for money greed?
oh and to warn ye dont go pet the imported puppies!

There used to be an awful place near me that used to sell pups, I remember they had GSDs, the type of pups you are taught never to buy (timid, shaking, hiding at the back of the pen, but to the uninitiated would look really cute)

The USPCA are kicking up a stink over this and for once I agree with them.

Agree, no one should buy a puppy from a pet shop/shed/over a garden gate/back of a car boot anyway these days.

I think they covered puppy farms in rouge traders on the BBC - they bought pups from petshops and dealers that had brought them from ireland and only 1 survived but cost the owner nearly £1000 to get it vaguely healthy!!! The sad thing is people still buy them, I used to work in a vets and you could always tell a pup from a puppy farm as they were always so poor and had so many health problems - people sometimes feel sorry for them to and buy them which just keeps the cycle going! Most of them have Parvo and have been fed rubbish as have the bitches which are continuously in pup - so sad!
But I suppose it is no different to your back yard breeders anywhere that churn pups out - my favorite rubbish foods that BYBs feed to their puppies are wheetabix, scrambled egg, carnation milk and tripe - non of which have any nutritional value - the number of new puppy owners who were advised to feed their pups these is huuuge!! Beware anyone buying a pup if they tell you they have been feeding any of these - walk away!!!

She's having extra oil and vitamins to compensate but she's a worry. And no I wouldn't recommend it at all.

Some one posted on here about writing to our MPs about puppy farms, which I did, and surprisingly I actually got a reply saying he was passing my concerns onto the environment secretary and would keep in touch!

Bit of a sweeping statement!! We are no back yard breeder...

We feed our pups scrambled egg, and although not carnation milk we do feed goats milk , OK this is alongside a good puppy food too.

But your sweeping statement sounds like anyone who feeds any of the above has no care for their bitch or pups!

We find a little scrambled egg and milk are a good appetiser to encourange them to eat up! Our pups are good stong and healthy and there is nothing wrong with feeding the above so long as you are ensuring they get enough vitamins and minerals to support them by also feeding a good quality complete puppy diet!!

We also find that adding the appetisers helps a lot if they go off their food when they go to their new homes!

Ditto the above.......I would also/do feed a puppy on the above, minus the carnation milk and im no BYB

, I take the soddein things from the BYB's , along side a few dry meals of ggod quality food, I like a puppy to have a variation and not be fed he same food day in and out, it helps boost their appetite and encourages them to eat, they usually get bored of the same old kibble.

I usually find that those who dish out puppies uncaringly for the purpose of dosh making, actually don't give any feeding advice, esp BYB's as usaully the puppies are sold young and right of the tit

excuse my language

or they are on some sh!t quality food(cheap breeders bag of dry rubbish) or adult food

So I have to disagree with u too Bh

And I'm going to stick up for tripe! Best thing we ever fed our lot, but you can't really get it here anymore after the BSE scare.
Lots of greyhound men around here give Weetabix too.

I'd be more worried about the rescue place one poster on here got her dog off, that encouraged her to feed Tesco value biscuits....
