12. Yikes! Mum looks relaxed enough, though, and I'm sure you'll have lots of fun in weeks to come.

Are they Spinone or wirehaired pointer pups?

Awwwwww, so cute. Crikey, 12 - she's got her paws full

Can't wait to see more pics - what breed is she (she's gorgeous).

Thank everyone, she is a wirehaired pointer. Her first litter (and probably only!!) and I think she is a bit puzzled about it all.
Does anyone know how long the afterpains, digging and losing discharge goes on for please?

The discharge may carry on for a few days. In my experience they do not carry on digging after they have finished whelping. Have you had her checked out by a vet to make she sure has finished, which seems likely with 12, and hasn't retained a placenta. Her calcium levels will need watching too. Gorgeous bitch by the way, and 12 pups will keep you and her very busy. She looks to be coping very well for a first time mum but I would make sure pups are gaining weight equally and if not perhaps consider supplementary feeds.

Thanks for your good wishes everyone and thank you for your help MM, I found on another forum that is can be common for them to keep scratching up to 2 weeks after so I'm hoping she is ok. The vet checked her the day after she whelped and again when they had their dewclaws done and said all is well. I have been keeping an eye on her temp as I am paranoid about womb infection after my horse got sick and again it is normal. The discharge is yucky but doesn't smell.
I am feeding her puppy replacement milk with her puppy biscuits and fresh chicken/mince. How do I keep an eye on her Calcium levels?
The pups all seem very content and feed well but there is one really little one who isn't putting on weight as fast as the others which is worrying me. I am trying to feed her the replacement from a bottle but she takes very little. She seems to suckle plenty and doesn't seem distressed. Would she be crying if she wasn't getting what she needs? Should I use a pippette to get it into her..I am afraid of choking her!

I will update photos in a day or two as they look much the same at the mo...a little plumper maybe!

they are absolutly gorgeous we have been looking for a wirehaired pointer for a while now where are u based i gather u r selling them and not keeping 12 pups thats such a massive litter poor mummy.
Sorry had to ask i kinow they have only just been born but they are stunning and love mummy

It sounds as if you are doing everything right with your babes. You can't actually monitor calcium levels as far as I know, probably badly worded on my part. What I meant was to keep an eye on her for signs of low calcium levels (eclampsia). The bitch will be come very restless and possibly disorientated and wobbly on her legs, with a high temperature. It is a very serious condition but luckily one that is easily treated by your vet. If the little puppy is feeding well from your bitch I wouldn't worry too much about her. Perhaps put her on the bitch for a bit extra when the others are sleeping. Tbh with a litter of 12 you are almost bound to get one smaller one, but as long as the bitch isn't pushing her away she should be okay. I think it is echodomino on here who had a Bridget the Midget in a litter who is a healthy youngster now. Just wait until you have 12 of the little darlings running round, hope you have stocked up on newspapers
