Purchase deposits

Swiftly realising that the most desirable ponies/horses get snapped up at the speed of light ie deposits made within hours of advert going online.

I'm assuming that if I'm lucky enough to be first to see one of these gems and like it, I will need to put down a deposit immediately.

What percentage of purchase price is normal and what form of payment?

I realise I need to get a receipt detailing deposit and dobbin. Do i need to be traipsing around the country with a wad of cash, or can I make a deposit by cheque?

I made a deposit with a cheque, but also get a receipt for it.

But had to pay the rest is cash, which took me by surprise but she was a dealer and the horse is great.
