Pure feed?

I’m looking to change my pony’s feed and have found Pure Feed. Spoke to them and they recommended the balancer or the pure easy.

Any experiences with pure feed? In particular those two?

I fed the Pure Easy last winter when my pony needed a bit of feed. He loved the taste and it gave him enough energy without being silly. I do dispute their maths for the argument that it's cheaper than feeding chaff, feed and a balancer. I went through a bag every 3-4 weeks depending on his work level.

I changed to it a while back. I was looking to economise without reducing quality and the Pure Feed balance worked out cheaper than what I was previously using (inc an FP balancer). My mares hooves were very dodgy when i bought her, and they improved in quality on the previous regime, but without growing much foot. Since she's been on the Pure Balance, she's been growing hoof and the farrier has to use the snippers on her - first time ever. Her general condition is good, and she licks the bowl clean, so no complaints.

The thing with feed is it's not the only consideration - nutrition also comes from the grass/hay a horse eats, so it's the balance of nutrients in that, along with what's in the feed (and they all have different combinations/amounts of vits and mins) that may or may not make a difference. I have to admit to being a bit of a spreadsheet geek when it comes to comparing feeds and balancers - it's quite illuminating! :D

I feed Fibre Balance to all of mine. I like it as it's all-in-one with the vits/mins, pre and probiotics, has no alfa, no NIS, no molasses and all 3 of mine love it. It's low cal and low sugar, so good for my good doers and ulcer-prone mare.

I sometimes add an extra handful of top chop zero for the fatty welshy, as he needs filling up with cheap empty calories now and again.

The only problem is that our local feed shop has stopped stocking it, so I have to buy it online for delivery to the house, and they have started charging for delivery whereas it used to be free. It's only £5 I think, so not much in the grand scheme of things.

All of ours are on Pure feeds.

Fibre Balance for the Shetland (a tiny amount to administer his supplements and he won't eat TopChop Zero out it's own )
Easy for the in-full-work Welshy and the out-of-work injured youngster (unless he starts gaining excess weight that is, in that case he'll be switched to the Fibre Balance with the shetland)
Veteran Mix for the TB in rehab work

Much like Chianti I don't know if it's much cheaper, but it is simple to feed and all of our horses look great on it and don't go silly on it. And like HeyMich I will add TopChop Zero to bulk it up a bit (as the youngster bolts down his food otherwise)

As I said, I’ve spoken to them and they said the normal balancer or the pure easy. But what would you guys who use it suggest?

Pony is 13.3hh 6 year old and worked 5/6 days a week - everything from hacking, lunging, flatwork and jumping. He’s out for 20 hours a day and he is a bit of a fatty. He needs the stamina/energy without the fizz as he is quite forward.

Also how much do you feed/how long does a bag last?

I would probably say, for an active young pony, the Easy is the one I would go for.
Although you do say he's a bit of a fattie so maybe the Fibre Balancer (is that what you meant by normal balancer.... because they do one that is just the balancer but I'd be surprised if they told you balancer only or easy considering the in between is right there!) and see if he does well on it, if he's not got enough energy on it it's very easy to change between the two (we do it all the time especially between seasons or work loads)

I feed two stubbs scoops per day between two horses and a bag will usually last me between 1-2 weeks. When only my girl is on it (the 14.2 Welshy) I can get a bag to last nearly 4 weeks if I bulk with TopChop Zero.

I've fed Pure Easy for a while now. My storage space is limited, so I wanted a fibre based feed that could be fed to my EMS pony, the sweet itch Exmoor with hind gut sensitivity and then my new cob. They all love it and the latter two even ate Panacur in it recently. I simply add a little extra linseed for the cob and will add carrots in winter.

I feed pure balance with chaff, fast fibre and salt. My horse used to have no balancer - but my dressage coach felt she needed more. She looks fab on it. She gets 500g a day, so a bag lasts me a month.
