Pure feeds & Simple systems

I am going to change my horses feed as I don't think it is helping him. He is currently on Alfa A Oil & Calm & Condition. However I am worried that the C&C is packing him up as he has been constipated all week. Also it hasn't helped him gain weight.

I like the idea of providing a feed that is good for their digestive systems and have come across Pure Feeds & Simple Systems which both have an ethos of natural fibre based feed that is good for them.
I wanted to know if anyone had any experience of these companies/products.

Also do they work out expensive and is it just as good to feed Alfa A Oil and multivitamin as it is to pay extra for these feeds?
 
Have a look on the UKNHCP forum, there is a lot of good feed advice on there and a diet that basically gives the Simple Systems kind of thing, but at a fraction of the cost.

I use it and it works incredibly well. I spend about £50 a month to feed 3.
 
I use Simple Systems Lucie Nuts and Grass Pellets for my horses, along with Topspec Balancer and Alfa A Oil...best thing i have ever fed

I thought I read somewhere that Pure Feeds use various inhibitors etc which Simple Systems don't? And that this affected how it was digested in the hindgut. Might be wrong but I'm fairly sure that was what was said.
 
whats the logic in feeding luci nuts and the alfa-oil? aren't they the same thing except just added oil to one of them?
Just wondering cos I have one of mine on lucinuts and as it seems to be pretty much the same thing, I could give alfa-oil instead...?

I found C&C to be rubbish as well- in fact in the end one of mine was completly overwhelmed by the amount of slush she had to eat and went right off it.

I suspect that alfa-oil is just as good as any of the lucinuts/lucibix ( its all just alfalfa anyway) and your own multivitamin would be just as good. However, the simple systems red bag grass nuts may be the key thing that will put on weight and condition as it's made from good quality grass.- I am trialling these with one of mine.

However, yet again it has to all be soaked and I'm not sure that horses like being fed huge buckets of slush??
 
I feed both my youngsters on the Red bag grass nuts and Alfalfa, they have no problems whatsoever in hoovering up buckets of slush with stalks in :-)
 
Mine gets Primero Total. He looks fantastic. Can fart for England and is as sane as he is ever going to get. Everyone compliments me on how he looks and he lives out 24/7.

It has no cereal, starch, sugar. Fantastic.
 
You see I am not keen on the slush anymore, and it would be brilliant to have a complete feed as I don't really want the hassle of feeding lots of different things.
I don't understand why you would feed alfaa and alfalfa pellets as surely they are the same - or is there a difference.

Pure feeds recommended their Pure Working complete feed but at £13.45 per 15kg bag it works out very expensive as I would need one a week.
I wonder if it's worth it.

I will ask simple systems what they suggest (really like the idea of luciebricks)

maybe I will try alfa a oil & multivit first in the interest of saving money.
Interesting that all reply's have been about simple systems, is pure feed new to the market?
 
Have you been soaking your calm and condition? i have 2 on it and no constipation problems. How long have you been feeding it? if only a week then it would be unlikely that you would get much weight gain in a short time. I too use the alfa a oil and add instant linseed both seem to look v well on it.
 
I have had him since june and he has been on it from about July. Yes it has to be soaked but I am on part liv and wonder if they sometimes don't add enough water or put in too much c&C.
I have never had the constipation problem on it before but untill 2 months ago was on diy.

Either way he definately hasn't gained any weight from it but think I just have to accept he is a late developer. Hopefully living out in summer will sort him out.

I just find C&C a bit of a pain and it doesn't seem to have done much for him.
Very economical though one bag goes along way.
 
There was a post on this a little while ago and there was very mixed opinions on Simple Systems. I used to be at a yard where everyone fed it, and I have to say the horses seem to get bored of it eventually. Also there is a lot of faffing about with soaking it (although it can be soaked all together in one bucket if you feed more than one product) but if you don't want to feed 'slush' I would think again about Simple Systems because the majority of it needs soaking and can be quite slushy. I stopped using it as mine refused to eat it after a while and my friends horse wouldn't eat it at all.
 
Trouble is some hoses like kids get used to a higher sugar diet;

SS has no added sugar so its not to every horses taste!
Their Lucie Stalks, Ruff Stuff etc are just chaffs so no soaking; but then soaking isn't a problem for me as I have to soak the Speedi-beet anyway;

If you soak the mornings the evening before and the evenings in the morning its hardly time consuming!
 
Its not so much that its time consuming just that it can be tricky getting the right consistency.
If it was all round better then obviously I would do so but as I said the the C&C it seems like it can really pack them up.

I had a reply from them and they recommended lucie cobs & total eclipse which really is alfalfa & a balancer.
Umm...... Having looked at both I would be inclined to go with Pure feeds -pure working but I am not convinced that there is any difference in just feeding alfa a oil and multivit so I will do that and save the bank balance me thinks.
Might try instant linseed aswell , seems like it does the trick
