After reading quite a bit about the uses of magnesium I have decided to give it a try on my moody mare that hasn't responded that miuch to other 'moody mare' type supplements.
I know that different ones suit different horses but is it est to buy pure magnesium powder like this...

Or buy a ready pre made horses supplement like Magnitude??
Any advice and experiences welcome!

Good question, I'm just looking at changing from magnesium oxide, which I've used for years, to magnesium chloride, which has a much higher bioavailability. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11794633 .
Not sure about commercial magnesium preparations, if they have mag ox, then no, as you're paying over the odds for a cheap ingredient, if they contain mag chloride, then maybe.

I'm having trouble tracking down food grade mag chloride at a good price though, so if anyone else has a source, please share!

As to whether magnesium works as a calmer, no idea, I use it along with other minerals for my barefoot cob.

Natural horse supplies do the high grade mag ox for about £12, magnesium will only work as a calmer if the horse is lacking it.

Sorry just noticed you know about natural horse supplies, I would prefer to buy it like this knowing your getting the product in its best form and nothing else, I find the ready made supplements sometimes only have a small amount of the main ingredient the rest is just fillers so you have to feed tons of the stuff.

I buy mine from progressive earth on eBay, magnitude doesn't give enough mag for what I wanted and get on well with progressive earth one
