Is anyone experiencing problems with purple spray kept in first aid kits for disinfecting skin/hoof areas? I have recently bought two different replacement pump sprays of it, both apparently popular brands. When sprayed on wounds both are very watery and leave very little purple to indicate that its covered the area. It also does not seem to dry like the previous stuff did and wipes off as soon as its touched. I threw the last empty one away assuming all brands would do the same job and feel stupid now that I did not note its brand name or ingredients. If someone could recommend a brand that drys purple that would be great.

You need to check what you're buying. "Purple spray" traditionally contained gentian voilet as the active ingredient when I was a child. When buying some recently I noticed there are lots more brands and many of them contain no gentian violet at all but other ingredients instead. I'm not saying they're useless but if you're treating a wound/thrush/whatever you need to be aware of what you're putting on it. I remember one contained aloe vera, useful stuff but can't imagine it would be much use for disinfecting hoofs. Sorry I don't know what brand mine is, not even sure it is branded.

Thanks for the advice about ingredients. The one I have is branded but has no ingredients on the bottle. I'll look into Terramycin and see if I can find any with gentian violet though. Thank you both.
