I am going back for my second year of University soon and am considering putting my 15.2hh polo mare into foal (when I say considering I currently mean fanciful idea!)
My mare lives with my sisters 15.2hh polo gelding and sometimes our 12.2hh Dartmoor pony. We have a hilly 7 acre field with a field shelter and a 3.5 acre field with a barn. When I am at Uni my sis and dad look after the horses - I come back every holiday and most weekends.
Now, my mare is 13 years old. This is why I'd be less inclined to wait for after uni to put her in foal. I intend to keep a foal for polo should I have one! There is a wonderful gentle stallion which I visited the other day (out if curiosity as I was going past anyway) who is of excellent quality and the fee is £400. I know the overall cost is much more than this!
Is this a terrible idea?? I am a law student and am very likely to be a traineeship near home so I will probably be back home full time in 2 years time and summers ly consist of admin jobs at the law firm and hopefully an internship next summer at the same firm.
I hate to see my mare go to waste whilst I am uni but there is no one who can play polo on her whilst I am away and we have had a very bad experience with loaning a few years ago so that is out of the question.
Is this a terrible idea? I brought on 3yo to play polo and sold her at 6 years old so I have had some experience with youngsters - not much though for horses younger than 3 though!
