Our fields were "Limed" yesterday morning, we still haven't had any rain, and none forecast until saturday! So are we ok to turn out? The guy who did it says so, its not toxic to animals apparently?

I don't think it is toxic but when we had some of our fields limed I noticed that the horses didn't graze in the limed fields until after it had rained heavily so I wondered if they didn't like the taste.

I heard that lime is not harmful to horses, and can be used in their diets, for what reason I do not know! Can I ask, why do you put lime on the fields? Is it something to do with soil balancing for weeds, or some sort of fertilising? xx

shouldnt do him any harm at all, but i would maybe offer him some nice hay as well, as the grass will be all limey til you get a good bit of rain on it to wash it in.

Apparently it is to balance the ph levels in the soil.

He has been turned out since yesterday and is fine, I have offered hay but prefers the long grass!

We had the fields limed to correct the pH (it makes the soil more alkaline) as we were having a huge problem with buttercups taking over the fields and they thrive in an acid environment. It is also supposed to help the grass which (following lime and a selective weedkiller) is now loads better than it has been for years.
