Putting my girlie on loan - advice please

Due to financial reasons I'm going to have to put my favourite girlie on loan. However, it is only a temporary measure. Is it heard of to do a 6 month temporary loan to stay at present yard? Also, I want to be honest in the ad - she is ok in the school but is extremely sharp and spooky out hacking. I obviously know how to handle that but to a lot of people it would put the wind up you!! They are not little spooks, they are full on all four feet of the ground, spinning round and sometimes bolting. Now that may obviously may make things slightly difficult. I am obviously going to do a loan agreement but everyone treats their horses in a particular way. I know that you can't enforce things as such, but I don't shout at her, as she's nervy and breaks loose. Help!! Some many questions on something I really don't want to do

Well, my mare is pretty sharp out hacking & needs a firm but gentle & reassuring rider. Her loan was variable in time & my friend has taken her on.

They suit each other perfectly.

I would say be completely open in your ad & really make sure they get on.
It shouldn't be a problem as many people want short term loans, especially to be kept at present yard.

Cant see any reason why 6 months should be a problem.Re her issues as long as your honest should be fine.Having a sharp horse myself (only hacking) I dont think I would want a completely bomb proof horse so she might appeal to some one similiar.I have cat leaps spinning but not bolting so I know where you are coming from she needs a quiet rider to calm her own nerves.Im sure you can adapt your loan I have a mare for my daughter and owner has added certain requirements and stipulations.
 
Yes it would be possible to do a 6month temp loan, and for the horse to stay at the present yard. The only trouble is finding someone who wants to do it - most people prefer to take the horses to their yard.

The other thing to remember is that school is about to break up, so you will get a lot of kids looking for that sort of thing. Not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, but you could find yourself with no loaner in a couple of months when they go back, and loaning a horse in Septemeber/October is a lot harder than loaning them in the summer.

I am sure you will find someone that suits your circumstances though, there are lots of nice people out there that want to loan horses.
 
I've loaned out two horses in the past and in both cases have specified that the loan will be reviewed by both parties after 6 months. I agree with the honesty. One of mine was a nappy rearer, but because the loaner was prepared, all was fine and she had him for nearly 2 years, before moving onto a bigger horse of her own.
 
if the mare is actually BOLTING out hacking, then I would say that this is not a suitable horse to put on loan to anyone. If, rather, you mean that she has a tendency to run off, then it might well be possibly to find someone suitable for her.

I think it is possible to find people for short term loans - but generally this would be over a summer period.

a short term loan would be great for someone who wanted to 'trial' buying a horse - but your mare doesn't sound suitable for this purpose.

TBH you will probably have more chance of finding a suitable home for the mare if you consider letting her move away - most experienced riders already have links to their preferred livery stables or even have their own stabling.

I say this from the perspective of someone who has their own horse on loan to someone over 100 miles away - but a fabulous home that suits him down to the ground (found through HHO, no less!)
 
Thanks for your reply. Whilst I agree that she isn't suitable for a novice, there must be experienced people out there that maybe 'in between' horses that would be happy to have her just for schooling. The reason that I don't want her to move yards, is that it has taken me a good couple of years to get her settled in a stable overnight and plus I want to be able to keep an eye on her. This really is a short term solution and she will be coming back to me at the end of the six months.

I am glad that you have found a good loan home for yours, I hope I find someone to look after mine

I agree with Rachelferd. I was looking for months, and I mean months and wanted to keep my bou at the present yard but finally relented and he now has a lovely loan home miles and miles away, I was nervous about the distance but the person and opportunity and trust and bond both with me and loanee and my horse and her was paramount.
