For my bhs 1 exam I have to put on a martingale. In the past I have always put on the bridle and martingale together, but is this the correct way? Does the martingale have to be undone and put on separately from the bridle? Also the right way to tack up is saddle first, then bridle, but if im using a martingale, does the bridle go on first?

According to M of H, it is usual to put on martingale first, then saddle, then bridle so that means the bridle and martingale must be separate.
If you're doing exams for BHS then it is really advisable to have a copy of the Manual of Horsemanship; it's all based on that, or was; then learn and practise it religiously!

For the BHS Exam, if the horse you are tacking up has a martingale the it is likely to be given to you not attached to the bridle.

I put on the bridle, then martingale, then saddle. Then attached the reins to the martingale. My BHS book did not state which to put on first.

Ask your instructor what she advises and go with that. If the examiner questions what you did as long as you can give an explination for it you should be ok.

make sure you dont leave the martingale attached when you have the horse tied up in the stable! Undo it and knot it...friend failed on that (isnt wrong, just hard to remember the BHS way Be Horrifically Slow!!)
