Putting ribbons in a BIG mane

I am taking my horse to a fun ride next weekend that has a fancy dress element. I'm not a big fancy dress person but I thought I might show willing by putting some ribbons in my pony's mane. However, I can't plait her mane as it's HUGE (she's Icelandic). You certainly couldn't plait it conventionally and a running plait wouldn't work either as even if I could get all the hair into a plait I don't think she's be able to move her neck freely at all. Has anyone got any ideas for weaving ribbons into a mane whilst leaving most of the mane loose?
 
Could you split the mane as though you were going to plait and place a band top,middle and bottom and simply pass the ribbon over and under each segment?

I'm thinking that there have got to be some techniques used for heavy horse turnout that might work. Any heavy horse grooms here?!
 
Yes, just tie a knot or bow in one end to join them together.

The key to braiding is practice and getting up high!! Make sure you're on a stool or step ladder of some sort so you can see the top of the mane clearly, otherwise your arms will hurt like hell and you run the risk of the plait not staying on the top of the mane.

You only need a tiny amount of mane each time you do a plait - just enough to keep the ribbon(s) in place. The rest of the mane is left free. Whatever ribbon you have left, just cut off or plait down a strand of mane.

Now to decide on ribbon colour! Green and white, green and yellow or yellow and white in a black mane (black horse)?
