We were picking up yesterday on the shoot.....yes, in the snow, freezing fog and minus temps, God I must be mad!!....and at the very beginning of one drive a gun shot a crow. It came down and Flyn marked it. I sent him off immediately and he scouted the correct area for ages but came back without it.

I waited until the end of the drive and then sent both dogs up to the same spot and they hunted for ages but neither came back with the crow. :(

The young gun was very high spirited and completely understood that some dogs will not pick a crow (because they taste bitter!) and scrambled up the thorny, brambly, brackeny bank himself and got it :o

My dogs won't pick a woodcock either - I have to root around and find it myself! :o

Obviously I have very discerning dogs!! Would your dogs have picked it?

Flora wont pick pigeon! Not tried her on a crow! She only picked her first phessie last time out! Most of the spaniels I've seen out have picked anything, crow, woodcock, pigeon, squirrel :p I have a feeling Flora will always be a little more choosy on what she picks tbh but time will tell!

Henry rolls in crows that have been dead for a while...:p:rolleyes: never come across one I wanted him anywhere near so couldn't say if he would pick one up. I suspect not, as it took a lot of coaxing to get him to pick his first pigeon, which I am given to understand is one of the less smelly birds? Although once he got the idea he was very enthusiastic:)

With the odd exception Popple generally does putting up, rather than picking up, work :) However I should think if she found one she would get it. That's purely because the mixture of patterdale & spaniel means she'll get fur, feather and anything else

With the last shoot I went out on, one of the other dogs, a terrier mixture, got a muntjac deer :o

I'll get it, and put it in the bin for you :D

Oh dear, have you been reduced to a smaller bin these days?:( Times are hard for us all:(

LMAO - thats probably where it ended up - but the gun wanted to show off!!

My dogs will pick pigeon and, unfortunately and extremely embarrassingly, chase deer :o

They also very happily eat the numerous dying starlings in the garden - disgusting things!! Or bring them into the house as a present for me

But I think yesterday, they were desperate to bring back a partridge for me from that spot and a crow really didn't cut the mustard

Pops is good about leaving deer, (thank goodness, as we've a lot around at the mo), but a hare is pretty tempting to her!! :o

I find it hilarious when Flyn scents a hare - obviously he follows the scent but if only he would look up and actually see where its going - he would cut a lot of corners!

But then again he's not a greyhound!! I love seeing the hares here :D

Henry almost did himself a mischief the other day, leaping up and down while he was trying to climb up a tree after a squirrel...:o

LOL - yes, that too - stupid dogs!! ;)

And I bet if he caught said squirrel he would bring it back to you - unlike my dogs and the crow!!!

I had a hare incident this morning, I'd love to say his neck hurts as much as my shoulder does after the boink we both got when he ignored me and I had to brace myself for impact for when he hit the end of the line at a gallop, but I somehow doubt it!

And you are such a little thing too!! I would love to say I feel your pain but the only time mine are on a lead is between drives and then Flyn pulls like a train (my fault - more training required!) but going up steep hills - its a blessing ;)

He is solid muscle and could push down the side of a house (as other fellow picker uppers have remarked!!) - I certainly wouldn't want to be on the end of a line when a hare pops up - but then again, (being a bit big headed here) he is brilliant to the stop whistle ;)

Popple actually caught a hare when she was about 18 months old. My vet at the time was insistent when I mentioned it that it must have been a rabbit/baby/sick one  but honestly, although not 100% full grown, there was nothing wrong with it - she's just that damn fast, and at her size, v v quick to turn! :o

I normally spot them before he does and am a bit more on the ball but was sleepy this morning and he was off and running before I realised what was happening and could croak 'nooooo' - he's a big boy, I'm a wee girl, I have had to develop muscles which rival his :p it's not even the hare that would be the problem, it would be where it would lead him :o

Out of interest CC, how much does big B weigh?

I remember canine Puppy in her prime, and my gosh she was powerful (Although I don't think she knew it, being such a softie in the head & heart :p)

When she was PTS (back when I was slim :o) she weighed a fair bit more than me! She was over coxing weight! :o When I booked the appointment to let her go, they asked me if I wanted to take her home with me, (or for them to have her cremated), but tbh, we never would have been able to get her in the car, deceased :(

Most dogs won't pick crows! The only dog i have who will is Ellie :) she has been bitten (?) pecked by i crow playing dead and my god she screamed. Don't blame her it was hanging off her lip! She will pick pigeon, pheasant, woodcock, teal, duck, or anything of the like bless her.

Kensa will pick pigeon but not woodcock. I have to hunting for that myself if Ellie isn't with me!!:D

As for deer ... JAKE! I think he's crossed with a beagle. He will chase and it's highly embarrassing. Loads of deer around here, as you know ;):D

He was 40kg at just over two years old so I imagine 42-45, and he is ripped at the mo :D

Totally know what you mean, when N died I also asked them to hang onto her, as not only would I not have been able to manage, but I would have needed to get the boys up with a mini digger to be able to bury her at ours.

Apologies for GSD Mafia hijack RW - by way of an apology, I'll let you have this fabby recipe for crow casserole......

"Put two crows in the pot to simmer. At the same time, put in a brick. When the brick turns soft, the crows will be too"

:D
