Hello! I was wondering what are the best qualifications for a 16 year old who had been riding for 2 1/2 years? I can walk, trot, canter, gallop, jump ect. I am in Sixth Form so no qualification they would mean I have to give up my A Levels. What is the best route and not too expensive. I am interested in Hunting and Eventing.

For what reason are you wanting to gain qualifications? What would you like to achieve in the future?

If you are currently doing A levels, I personally would say to MOST people to continue with the A levels if you possibly can. You can work on riding stuff alongside or later and will have a fall back should things change (you change your mind about working with horses, an injury, financial necessity, job availibility).

I just want something to really show for my work. I want to be a Doctor in the future.

I was looking into the Stage 1 BHS, It looks good however is their any alternative to this? Focused more on Anatomy, Biology and Riding.

Your A levels are ESSENTIAL if you want to be a doctor (as I am sure you know).

The BHS Stages would be a good option in that they can be completed alongside your traditional education. The Horse Owners Courses would be another option, though they are completely theory based and involve no riding. They are generally cheaper than the stages. The ABRS equivalents are also an option if these are more readily available in your area.

As you are only 16, Pony Club may be an option to consider. Either a branch if you own your own horse or a centre if you do not. Though it would be worth enquiring how they arrange their groups - if you are starting at the beginning you may want to check you will not be grouped with the 6 year olds!
