No personal experience
They sell monthly at Exeter under several names
Tread carefully!

I've just bought my second horse from there in the space of a couple of months. The first one (Lily) has turned out to be an absolute diamond. I had heard the negative reports, but a lot of people also told me that they do get some really lovely horses there. I hope my second horse from there turns out to be as lovely as the first, as he will be for my husband who is a TOTAL novice! I saw him on AdHorse and fell in love, we will be picking him up Saturday. I'm so excited!!!

I would stay clear off them, iv seen 2 horses come from them who both had problems but they wouldn't hear any off it. Both were riddled in lice as well. Yep they sell at Exeter every month and I know it sounds bad but I can always tell it's their horses by looking down at their feet. Be careful dealing with them

Avoid

Quarrystone Stables, Were P & B Stud until Trading Standards took them to Court. Now see name has yet again been changed to Quarrystone Stud

Sometimes just trade under their personal names too and will often sell the real bad ones at the auction with no name attached to it.

Some nice horses do come out of there but: a) Vet b) Pay half of what they ask c) take someone experienced and d) make sure you try it alot. Most of them are foreign imports and im not sure they always know themselves what they are selling. Hence I have known some ppl to get some amazingly talented horses for peanuts. Oh and if they tell you they dont have a school, they do, its hidden.

Never met anyone who has said anything good about them....only ever hear bad things.
Like everyone else has said, be very cautious, and tread extremely carefully!

Many of the horses and ponies come from abroad and arrive in a sorry state, coughing, thin etc. Others are injured competition horses which are happy at a lower level. They trade under several names. As above, take a vet and try before you buy. I do know people who have been very pleased with their purchase.

My horse is from Quarrystone stables, I am pleased with my horse but I have put in blood sweat and tears to get her where she is.

As with any dealer provided you know what you're talking about and are prepare to take a risk then go for it - however if you are unsure or buying for a nervous or novice then I would suggest looking else where. Like most things in life you get what you pay for.

I hope you find something suitable x

I live very close and my best friends sister worked there for a short period of time until she saw and was asked to do things with horses she wasn't prepared to do.

Be VERY CAREFUL.

Don't believe any of the stories attached to the horses - trial and trial again, vet and if buying a mare be warned that lots of people have bought one and ended up with a BOGOF.

I've got a BOGOF from there - the mare in the centre of my signature! The horse I bought was a nice mare, I had her vetted and she was reasonably priced for what she was. Turned out to be in foal and 9 months later, out popped Muppet!

I bought a 16hh tb mare "never been raced" local level showjumper from them, my friend who was born with disfigured hands bought a 15hh haflinger 10 year old plod..

turns out i had a fresh out of racing mare who had been doped and buted up, she had a very painful rotated pelvis!! We kept her as i adore her but it did cost us £1500 + to get her to where she is now!! Spose i could reconise she was a sweet mare who would try anything for her rider and has a lot of potential however that was luck..

my friends turned out to be a 25+ year old with terrible navicular, she kept falling over which is obviously not good/safe for my friend!! She was sweet but extremely head shy and we guessed she's been imported from Belgium for meat and they were trying there luck to sell her as a riding horse! Was deffo heavily buted up!!

The 7days money back garentee is a load of rubbish! He will blame you for whatever is wrong with the horse and will try and get out of it as best he could! I was lucky with mine but my friend had a lot of upset because of hers, she took them to caught and they did refund her and take betty away.

I do no that they were arrested after finding lots of illegal veterinary substances on the premises and huge amounts of cash were found!

AVOID THESE CROOKS!

I recently bought my Cob from there and although the place is a dump, I am really happy with what I bought, The young girl there Lucy was really friendly & helpful and after chatting with her for some time it has transpired that she is trying to turn the place around by buying in quality horses etc, but unfortunately 'Mud Sticks' and she knows this even though she has been given free reign to turn the place around however, she'll have a long, hard upward struggle.

As I said, she was friendly & helpful and I knew in my hearts of heart that my boy was okay even though I did have him vetted (passed) as I would if I was buying from anyone.

Agree with the majority DO NOT TOUCH WITH BARGE POLE.
I have known of them since the 1980's and my friend lived on a farm near them and the stories she told us were shocking.

Like any dealers yard; take a friend with you, plus have your own vet to do the vetting and not theirs.

I went to see a couple of horses a few years ago. They'd been imported from the continent (were both Haflingers); the gelding just didn't feel "right" and the mare tried to dump me as soon as we were out of the yard.

I wasn't keen on the feel of the place - tho' that's not the only dealers yard in Devon I've been too where it smelt more fishy than a dead mackerel (PM me if you wanna know where else I went).

What struck me as being particularly offish was the fact that you could have any vet you liked as long as it was one of the vets on their "list". Even if I'd seen anything I liked, I'd have walked away at that.

Yes OP there is plenty of stuff in the archives about them and so I'd say be very careful indeed; to me, if someone needs to change their name in order to trade then I'd give them a very wide berth.

They did have some nice horses there tho' TBH; there was a very nice show cob I saw plus another grey horse which had already been sold and was in the "holding pen".

may i suggest then that she suggest mr r stops bidding up his own horses at the sales, and that insted of using 4 different selling names they stick 2 one?

I bought an 8yo Belgian Bred Haffie Mare from there. nearly 4 years ago.

She was a real mess when i got her mentally. I have since managed to trace her history as her passport was genuine (and from what i have heard that is rare)

Now i did have her vetted by one of their vets as she had a nasty scar on her hock which they couldnt tell me about.

i tried her a few times when before i decided to buy her. I had some friends pick her up for me as i couldnt get there. On the way home she flipped out in the trailer and got both front legs stuck over the breast bar and a foot caught in the haynet. They didnt tell me any of this until they got her home. She has major seperation issues, I can hack her out on our own and take her away from other horses ok but she wont stay on her own and you cannot take any horse way from her (they didnt tell me this ) She has sweet itch again not told.

I managed to track down her history to a farm in Belgium who i contacted and luckily i found out that she had been bred there and lived there until about 12 months before i bought her. They has an Agent of theirs arrive at the farm looking for horses to buy to sell to England My mare was one of them because of the sweet itch. She had a foal and i believe that the weaning of her foal is the reason she has such issues with seperation.

The Farm is a lovely laid back quiet place and the horses are well looked after as i was invited over there and visited 3 years ago. They told me that They sold her for €700 and I bought her for £1400. They told me that i would have got a very nice mare with out sweet itch for what i paid for her and that next time im looking for a haflinger then i should go straight to them.

I do believe that all of her problems have stemmed from being at the dealers yard. In fact that when i spoke to them 2 years later about my mare, they remembered her. I believe that they had her with them for about 7 months and long enough to get to know her (What ever that meant). so out of 12 months 7 of those were at the dealers yard. which says to me that they either couldn't sell her of that she kept being returned. I have since found out that she has been in several homes and didnt sell in Exeter Market.

She has turned out to be the best little mare that i have owned and even though she is still a stress head at times. i will never sell her. By we have definitely had out ups and downs (me being airlifted to hospital due to her rearing up and going over with me out hunting- my fault i fell backwards and pulled her over).

But ive put alot of blood, sweat ad tears into her.

So be very careful.

I wouldn't change my mare for anything but i most definitely would not have bought her if i had been told eveything about her.

Cookies if you got through all of that

Ah, SpottyTB. If only you could've posted that in November last year!

I did :( it was summer last year i wrote on here about it but horse and hound removed it because it was .. how you say.. slightly abrupt!!
I must admit i was totally furious at them for what they had done to us and especially my friend!

Just sorry to hear another person has had a bad exspirience, i was so lucky with mine as she came right, but as many people have said, with a lot of blood, sweat and tears and MONEY!!

presses like button..

both mr BR and ms P C are, how shall i put this?..uuummm tricky customers

We bought Noah in November. He is an appy, supposedly from Denmark. He has now been diagnosed with bone spavin (congenital in his case) and will be due to go to surgery soon.

In our case, we were led to believe it was a private sale (we technically bought him from the dealer's sister) but it has since transpired that the email address they used is the dealer's and he sounds just like the rest of their so-called dodgy imports. I do believe they had honestly kept Noah for several years and his passport suggests that, but I also think he was sold once to somewhere in the Cotswolds and then returned to them.

Oh well, we've learned a valuable lesson but I can't forgive them. My Mum's been waiting 40 years to have her own horse again and she hasn't been able to ride him once (except when we tried him and he seemed fine). I just hope that we can get Noah sound again for his own sake as he must've had a miserable bloody time.

It has been alledged on several occasions that a fair amount of their stock is bought from meat markets and are there because they have serious or degenerative health problems...are then shipped over to the UK and re-branded...alledgedly..;)
