Quarter Horses

Hi - they are great horses, usually smart and trainable, athletic and smooth to ride. There are different types and bloodlines, depending on the discipline they have been bred for, and numerous breeders in the UK.
 
I have never owned a Quarter horse but have ridden and handled a few. In my limited experience I have found them to be very easy going and uncomplicated, they can become shut down if they get bored, they tend to have nice natures and seem to be very hard workers.
 
I have 7 pure or pbs of my own and about 12 QH Boarders.

Cracking breed, turbo charged over a short distance (hence their name of course) versatile, extremely trainable, willing, intelligent, calm/mellow (they give the impression of being docile, they are, but they aren't dead on their legs) kind, people friendly, forgiving (more fool them in some cases) make great outcrosses, come in a huge variety of colours, and they do, like arabs and tbs, come in different 'styles' according to their lines and what they have been bred for. Enough?

I have genuinely yet to meet a bad one, 9 out of 10 horses I see are QH or Paints. Their conformation is slightly different to horses those in the UK are used to seeing, they are more butty (halter bred ones are too muscled for my taste) mine are cattle bred and don't have arses like a beef bull.

They are up to weight (have to be, have you ever tried lifting a western saddle?;)) vary in size from 14h to over 16h in some cases, anyone from your Granny who only sat on a beach donkey once 50 years ago, to a young child can ride one (must find that clip for you, give me a bit to find that) Many children here skip the pony stage and go straight to a QH.

I never thought that I'd meet a breed I clicked with as well as I do with arabians, but I have now and I really rate them. Can you tell I quite like them?

Thankyou! I already have a Paint who is just a dream and my head is being turned by a perlino QH foal. If they are as nice natured and as kind as my paint boy I am sorely tempted!
 
I work on a QH stud and compete a part bred QH, broken a paint x QH and in the process of beaking 4 pures aswell. They have lovely temperaments and very quiet. The one I compete(palimino in my profile pic) is super, has an amazing jumpand movement and also competes trec with his owner. I would love to see more of them out competing in diff disciplines. Paint tend to be more sporty andcan be alot bigger and I prefer these,esp crossed with a QH. QH's that I ride are small and stocky, yet unbelievably fast:)
 
My best friend's mum bred them for years, so I spent every weekend at her farm with them.
I fell in love with one particular one (I always liked the ones they didn't!) so recently bought her as a 2 YOs - I never thought I'd have a bond with a horse like I did with my old ex racer but in 2 months she's a different horse and I'll never part with her.
About QHs generally, I can only echo the above, they such great all rounders...think the calmness of a cob crossed with the athleticism of a TB - but better =S

I have one! Pure breed.

Although she's only two and I've only had her two weeks, so I can't tell you much about them, but what is already very obvious is how clever they are! she actually stops, looks then works out what is best to do. :)
 
Awesome breed! I've owned four, currently have two reiners, 3 of mine have been largely cutting lines and good stock horse types, one more TB/QH mix pleasure type. Very trainable, strongly built, beautiful minds. All need a job as the beautiful minds need feeding!! But a lovely breed to be around.
 
We have a rising 3yo QH xTB he is lovely. He looks mainly TB - bay 16h, a bit gangly. But his temprement is fabulous. He is a very very quick learner. Not phased by much all. Like someone else said, he thinks about anything new and works out what it is you want from him. He has a spark about him but is very affectionate and kind, has a definite sense of humour. We got him at 8 months old and have never regretted it. He started long reining at the weekend for the very first time and accepted it very well, as he has with everything. He lays down in the field and lets you pick his feet out and you can sit on him while he lays there! My friend has his half brother who is TB x QH x corilio(sp), he is even more laid back. He sits up like a dog and is totally lovely too. Can you tell I like them?:D
 
My daughter bought ours as a bit of a project but he has lovely paces and is very athletic so whilst he probably won't go to the olympics:rolleyes: I do think he would dressage/event/sj to a decent riding club standard or above. At the moment he looks like he might event but she likes dressage so we shall see:) He has jumped a 5 foot fence as a weanling and can certainly shift in the field. Her instructor is surprised how nice his paces are (just started lunging on a big circle and offers a huge trot). Since she came off ponies we have had TBs so he is a bit of an experiment. He is definitely a very nice person.
 
I have a QH that came over from the States approx 15 years ago , she is with me as her owner ( who is American and was living in USA but moved to UK then back to USA then back to UK , decided that horse didnt need to travel everytime she moved ! ) so horse is with me in retirement . She is a chestnut mare and the easiest , quietest , well mannered and so comfy to ride . You could ride her down the motorway on a headcollar no problem ! She's a good doer and is a real sweetie . I have TBs and I'd have another QH tomorrow .... She was galloping around the field tonight ( well Pepe le Phew stylie ) tail up and snorting and annoying Shetlands ..... not bad for 34 years old !

Paint/QH they are the same, same shapes, same work ethic.:) Just different colours and different registries. My AQHA stallion is listed APHA. Many of my Paints share similar lines to the QH's (back to Eclipse, via Three Bars amongst others)

My Paint's mum is a TB and he is going to be quite athletic - this QH boy is going to be a little tank I think. He was only born yesterday but is so striking and pretty - like a baby unicorn. I'm wasn't really looking for another but my head is being completely ruled by my heart!
