We never got on with them either luckily we found someone who can do them freehand.

Try you tube they might have a few videos that might help.

We did get better results with using a very good body brush with water and setting spray but still didn't look as good as someone doing it without the stencil.

Small show ponies are the most difficult as they have the tiny squares you have to do with a comb nightmare ?

It depends on the design of the quarter marker and what you are trying to do with it.

For racing we don't do your usual hunter stripes, Riding horse V's or hack squares! Oh no! I go to town!

But no matter what you are doing a well groomed bum in the direction of the hair is your first start. Then I use a body brush, dip the end of the bristles in water, shake off the excess then brush down. I don't use any setting sprays or the likes and sometimes my markers are on for days of the horse hasn't had a proper brush ?

These were done using a variation of stencils mixed together. The Stars and squares one the squares are done free hand and I can do them a hell of a lot neater that was just a quick rough one to add to the vote on the works fb page ??

I used to use a stiff nail brush for squares and stripes on hunters and cobs. For riding horses an ordinary comb cut down to the size you want

Most stencils are awful!!
if it is for showing do them free hand. Have a look on youtube for videos on how to do quater marks and sharksteeth

It depends what you are using the stencils for. For showing I agree they should not be used and tradition hand done quarter markers are best. But for racing we have pretty much free reign so long as we are not advertising anything or anyone we are not Sponsored by. Hence we get away with the EG for Edinbirgh Gin as we are Sponsored by them.

If anyone wants to pick a design from the above pics I will decorate the derriere of the flat runner on Saturday with it ?
