Hi all,
There is the slightest chance that i might compete the lil' mare i have on loan:D(So excited, even thou nothings been confirmed or even spoken about yet!)Anyway i was looking at different ideas for quarter marks, but i don't know what would look best! i would only use brush on no clipping! as shes not mine and im only 15! so would secure them on with some hairspray or quarter mark spray or something. i was also thinking about some glitter spray (1 for horses!) as its only a wee local show nothing too serious through what i can gather. she is dark bay:D and my baby...any ideas pictures suggestions welcome!
Thank You!

I have always marked my horses up with a body brush. I do not use any sprays or water. You want a good clean coat and then a tightly packed body brush. The most simple to explain would be to brush the coat all in the same direction towards the tail. Brush in one stroke a diagonal stripe from point of croup to mid section of hind quarter and the same again from just infront of the tail to form a V. OR you can brush 2 vertical lines down l l . The brush under the V or the l l to tidy the underneath up with one cresent shaped brush stroke. Now to start the sharks teeth. 1 horizontal line and then stand at the side of the horses quarter and cut the line with a sharp diagonal brush stroke. Line up your next horizontal line and again cut with a sharp diagonal brush stroke. When you have got 3 or 4 sharks teeth in place then finish with brushing a nice line standing behind the horse equal on each side from the top of the tail down.

When you get better at it, it's amazing what you can do. I do one which looks like flags or bunting from the top the quarters down. You can sharks teeth the whole way around the quarters. Add diamonds etc etc. Flick the racing on one Saturday and just have a look at the horses in the paddock. You will get a good idea of what quarter marks you can do and the vast majority are all done with a plain old body brush. I think they look far better than a stencil.

Sharks teeth are nice and easy, and stay well, but the chequred ones look absoltely gorgeous. Make sure your pony has had a bath first, or you can see all the grease! (especially with the chequred ones) Good look with all your future showing! :D

You should see what I play with at the races! Stars, Thistles, Fluer Du Lyse, Flags, Dragons, Squares, Triangles, Diamonds, Windmills, Flowers - all mixed up in any fashion I feel like :D

For a local show you can pretty much do anything you like. Stripes are preferable and correct. I wouldn't use glitter or the likes, just a bog standard body brush, a sprtiz of coat shine and some artistic licence.

I did these using a cheapy nit comb from poundland than underneath did some shark teeth, was my first attempt at quarter marks, I than redid it using smaller checks and closer to his tail so it was more central. It's not something you want to do in a hurry. :)

What you do really depends on the shape of your horses bum if it's big I think racing stripes look lovely but if lacking in size something smaller looks better. If his bum really isn't that nice (a bit like my lads) I wouldn't do anything to spectacular so you don't draw attention to a weaker area.

Forgot to add this website is brilliant. :)
