Queen bee - not for the nervous

mounting dobbin yesterday, and heard a funny buzz. Thought it was neighbours and went to put foot in stirrup. At that moment, a queen bee flew out from under the pommel

Horse blissfully unaware of why i made a funny sqeaky noise. Just a bit bemused that saddle removed at high speed.
 
having gone hunting a couple of weeks ago and disturbed a wasps nest I can totally sympathise with you.One of the huntsmen's horses got stung,promptly dropped him and took off.Needless to say we went past the nest at speed and as far away from it as possible,but there were still angry wasps buzzing about and it was nerve racking to say the least.Glad you managed to come out of that unscathed.As said it could have been very different.

That would have been the quickest dismount ever.

I had a wasp go down the vent in my riding hat once. I was off the horse and running around shouting and the horse just stood there with a 'wtf?' look on his face
 
How scarey! A couple of years ago a bee chased our mare round and round the field. Don't know what the horse had done to upset the bee - but it was one seriously p**d off insect! We had to close the horse in her stable and close the top door. Bee was determined to get her.
 
We passed by a 'busy' wasps nest on the Badminton fun ride. My lad started snorting like mad and chucking his head about and I was aware of something flying into the inside of my riding hat. I managed to get H past the nest as there were wasps everywhere but he was a little preoccupied.

We checked is nose and face and he did not appear to have been stung, so whether one flew up / into his nose or not I don't know. While this was going on, I could hear an odd clicking noise from the left side of my hat, but was not inclined to take it off, given the situation. A couple of minutes later there was a buzzing and a wasp flew out from inside my hat.

How we both got away without being stung is a mystery, but I am grateful we did.
 
One very wet summers day I put on my old long wax coat that hangs in the tack room to go and fetch my mare in. As I was leading the horse back I noticed a wasp on my sleeve, so I flicked it off and walked back to yard. When I took my coat off I hung it up again and noticed a few more wasps flying around. A closer inspection of the coat revealed a bl@@dy wasps nest hanging on the inside of the coat lining!!! My daughter later revealed that she had seen the odd wasp hanging around the coat but didn't think anything of it!
