I've seen a few recently with a metal ring threaded through the handle section. I've been wondering what it's for and the only thing I can think is that it's for shortening the lead so that you can double it over and clip through that ring. I don't think I'm right though because then there wouldn't be a handle.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

I have one and I love it. Like you say, you can use it to shorten, to tie your dog to a post ( pub table leg :D )or something without having to tie a knot and it's also great for slinging it round your neck. No more knotting the lead round my waist!

Thank you guys. LindsayH I didn't think about the tying up bit - I put my chair through a lead handle in the pub today but it gave too much leeway so that would have worked wonders!

When I make leads I always put a ring in the handle. It is so much easier to put round neck on a walk. I sling mine round my neck and under one arm so I won't get strangled in an accident.

This is a short training lead...you can put the lead over your shoulder and clip to the ring so it stays in place.
The police style trying leads are even better...they are six foot long with several rings...I love these as the have double clips so can attach two dogs on the one lead, or use the variously placed rings to shorten the lead,or even secure the dog to a training post...very versatile.

I add key rings to the handles of my dog leads for the same reason. Saves me having to carry it on walks LOL.
