Just got a few questions about gelding as I don't know a great deal about it!

Is there a correct age at which you should geld, or do you play it by ear and go by the behaviour the colt displays?

Are there any repercussion of gelding too early - i.e. does it affect their growth in any way? And also, what is the approximate cost of gelding?

Thanks!

they need to of dropped to be gelded, best to geld if foal is still on mare as they recover better. cost when i had my boy done in may it was about £200

In the Welsh world, some colts are left as long as possible in order to get a good neck, I had my section D Fly done when he was 2 as he was getting to hard to handle and it did not interfere with his stature/personality, he was a bolshy little sod without his bits as well

Testosterone helps to close the growth plates so a colt that is gelded early will be somewhat finer boned and leggier than a colt that is gelded later. It will also have a more feminine or mareish look. If I had a colt that was gelded while still on the mare, I wouldn't put that colt into training as early as I might with a later gelded colt. Personally I prefer to wait until they are at least two and have waited until they are 3 to geld. IMHO, you get better bone and muscle and a more masculine looking gelding. But the colt's personality and your facilities and ability to handle a young stud also play into the decision.
