Yard owner thought one of the fields was a bit sparse, so last Monday, chain harowed (sp), rolled and put grass seed on the field, no horses on there since then, today we were told we could turn out on this field again.

But, one of the liveries is not happy saying there is an issue with grass seed and protein?, I'm not sure, does anyone have any ideas or answers, I would be very grateful :)

D'ONT let your horses out, way too soon.

I spoke with a grass seed company a couple of weeks back to get advice on the best mix for horses. They recommended AT LEAST 6 weeks before you turn out again.

Anything before then and it's not worth putting the seed down as it won't have time to establish.

We seed our 2 winter fields and don't turn out on them again for 2 to 3 months, depending on what the weather& grass growth has been like.

Is your friend saying theres a issue with horse eating grass seed?
Like others said its a waste of time seeding and putting horse back so soon,it takes a long time to withstand horses mouths and hoofs.
I normally seed october and turn out in may/june but ideally sheep graze first year but i realise this is not practical to most.

Thanks for the answers, yes friend says there is an issue with horses eating grass seed and protein?, her horse has tied up in the past and she says if she were to turn out it would risk her horse.

I've never heard this, but I'm not saying she is wrong, I'm just wondering if there is a posible health risk to the horse, yard owner seeded the field and has said to put horses back on the field now, yard owner is not horsey!, but really interested in possible health risk, if any?

Thanks in advance for any more replies :)

Hope I'm not sounding ignorant (sp) just want to learn :)

Horse seed will do no damage at all to horses.
Of course when overseeding it is best not to have any livestock in the fields so that the grass seed has got time to seed, germinate and become established. Of course this depends on rain and sunshine. Best practice is to leave livestock off the field for 2 years so that grass can become established and cut and collect the grass so as to dense it up but appreciate that in this case this is not possible.

The amont of grass seed put on is normally 10to14kg per acre so there is little chance of it eating any amount.
If your friend is worried about grass seed she wouldnt feed hay as it will find more there.
dont think you have any need to worry:)
