I think the answer to this might be different for different riding clubs, but just wondering what the general rule is..

My local riding club have restrictions on the lower classes, e.g. combination not to have won 3x1st place rosettes. Today my mare and I won the 2ft and 2ft 3 classes (:D), which, in addition to winning classes previously at the same show, means we now can't compete in the 2ft or 2ft 3 classes.

Do these restrictions generally only apply per season or is it usually the case that once you've won X amount, you can't ever do the smaller classes again?

I guess what we should be doing is moving up to the next height up, but due to an old injury, I don't really want to take her any higher for fear of causing her problems again. I guess we'll have to find somewhere else to compete at the lower heights and keep her going that way...

Poor old girl; she still thinks she can jump 3ft 6 I think!

Ah, thought that would be the case. I can see why they do it, it's just unfortunate for us as we can't really go any bigger. I'd feel awful if I pushed her up a class and she went lame again; I'm sure there's somewhere else we can go.

Our Club used to run this system, but now we run height classes that are basically open. We introduced this system for exactly the reasons you want to not jump higher. We had many older horses who would have had to stop competing due to their past, but weren't able to do the bigger classes anymore.

It also means those riders who have mental block about going over a certain height can carry on too. On the whole it works fine, and rareyl do we have problems with pot hunters.

In fact, after we started using this system, most other Clubs/ show centres in the area followed suit, so it must work :)
