Hello folks in Aberdeen,

Can anyone tell me when/where there are some shows where I could watch people showing horses in hand?

I want to show my girly in hand in the summer but have never done anything like this so have no idea what I am doing! Thought attending a few shows as a spectator would give me a better idea.

Thanks guys!

As above, the best places to see it done properly are probably the argicultural shows (Turriff, Keith, Echt, New Deer, Banchory etc.). Think Echt is the first one coming up. Otherwise, Cabin has a show in early May (look at their website). There's what-was-Fisherford-Show on tomorrow at Knock, its PC run now though but they're got a few in-hand classes I think.

You basically walk round and round with the class, the judge will normally ask each of you to trot one by one round the edge. Then she'll pull you in, often in order of how she likes the horses so far. Then you stand the horse out in front of the judge so she can look over it, then she'll ask you to walk away from her in a straight line then trot back towards her and keep going past for a bit (she'll move out of the way). You all walk round again once everyone has done this and she'll pull you in in order of prizes. Its very easy, just make sure you practice trotting up!! I did a ridden class a few weeks ago, first one with this particular horse, and I assumed he'd trot up but nope he refused to!!

Thanks! I went to the one at Waulkmill the other weekend and went home afterwards and practiced with my horse. When I tried to get her to trot up she looked at me as if to say "sorry - you want me to do what?!" haha! We have been practicing every night and she now trots up beautifully :D We have our first show on 2nd June so fingers crossed she does as well on the day as she has been doing in our practices
