Hubby is now starting to really ride rather than be a passenger and is also now doing some jumping...problem is he is getting off in some pain in his er hum...nether regions

How do you all deal with this, grin and bear it, you get used to it over time or is there some natty gear he could get, to hold everything up out the way.

I think he would be wiling to try anything at the moment

Sounds wierd - but what underwear does he wear?
When I used to teach, I always told men to wear y-fronts, not boxers, as they are a lot more comfortable (apparently - I wouldn't know being female!)

Develop very very strong leg muscles and hold yourself out the saddle completely (is my OHs advice!). He says watch blokes riding on the tele - bum is completely out of the saddle, position totally different to womans jump position xxxxx

Equetech sell some padded briefs or boxers for men to give protection where needed lol. I have sold the odd few through my shop in Norway. Bit pricey for pants but errm could be well worth it ;-)

he wears Y-fronts so I thought that would help

....hmm hold himself out of the saddle more...hehe he keeps being told to sit deeper in his saddle

I've seen the equtech padded undies wondered if they were worth the money, think I might suggest he gets a pair to see if they work

Personally, it doesn't seem to make any difference what the undercarriage is contained in.
I only have a problem if horse props.
I think its a matter of adapting ones technique to cope with any protrusions etc....

Cycling shorts do help , but Im not sure about english saddles

Get him some padded cycling shorts- exactly the same concept but without the 'equestrian' price tag

I'm a bloke. I wear the trunks form M&S and make sure they are a snug fit.

Problem wiht holding yourself out of the saddle is that when you land, you land harder.

I have a saddle specifically made for a man - most saddles are actually shaped more for ladies. My saddle has a narrower twist and a lower pommel. Works well, Talk to a GOOD saddle fitter. Kay Hastilow fitted mine (saddle, not briefs)

I didn't know you could get cycling shorts padded but guess its not the sort of thing you have to worry about when your female we just have to worry about strapping other wobbly bits down

Shall pass on all the suggestions so far

thanks guys and keep em coming if you have any mroe

friend of mine said he rode dressage in 2 pairs - one pair Y fronts for containment and support, one pair boxers to cover the seams of the Y fronts which chafed......

didn't know I knew him well enough that he was discussing his underwear :P

My OH rides and he swears by equitech briefs - not the shorts or boxer apparently they are rubbish, it has to be the briefs and better to get a size smaller so they hold everything in place, then proper Jodhs over the top that are also tight to hold everything in place. Arrange man bits "up front" when you dress and then sit on your bum!

He does the best sitting trot I have ever seen for an amateur rider so it must work!

Speedos are a good alternative if you have a pair but don't have the equitech pants(hubby's speedos have been ridden in more times than he's swum in them!). Cycling shorts have a padded bum but not the same support so don't work (he cycles too so has a couple of pairs).

It's all been said really. Nice tight Y fronts and pay particular attention to the saddle. I find Wintec saddles very comfortable and do all my riding in one, including jumping. I have had some nice quality English (Walsall) made saddles, but it has been like riding with a block of wood just where you don't want it.

If your OH is already tucking it all away, then I would have a look at the saddle he's using.

There is also a difference in position, look at male and then female dressage position, it is just not possible for any man to sit in a standing position, so it is necessary to develop a position where although the pelvis is rolled back a little more than a female rider, the back is not rounded and the 'armchair' position (seen so often and not just with men) is avoided at all cost. It also takes at least a year of pretty constant riding to find the right position, at least that's how long it took me.

It does get better with time, honest.

NeilM Dead right about the saddle, I rode a 17 something HH beast on holiday a few years back, the saddle was awful for me as a bloke, just couldn't get comfy no matter what.
