....someone at a show with a v nice item of tack/clothing. or even a v nice horse, but who didn't do very well, would you judge them for it?
Would you think 'all the gear and no idea'?

Mm I dont think so

Would depend on the nature of the rider I think, their show / round etc etc and other factors like that

I don't think so. They may not be a very strong rider (or a similar reason) but have the money to spend on nice things and horses. So long as they aren't doing anything that is a danger to their horse or others then it is no concern of mine or anyone elses (imo) if they have more 'gear than idea'.

I am not sure whether I am understanding the question so please forgive me.

Anyone who puts in the effort to go to a show and have the courage to get into a ring and be judged does have my admiration. I wish I could do it. I wouldn't probably have much idea to begin with but that is how we learn. Everyone has to start somewhere.

So no, I wouldnt judge them but would think what a nice horse or whatever they had. In fact, it would probably indicate they were not supported by a network of pros or old hands and deserved even more admiration for getting out there and having a go.

it would depend hugely on circumstances! if they rode nicely but didn't do very well for whatever reason, i wouldn't think anything of it at all (apart from probably wishing i had such a nice bit of kit!)
sounds like a bit of a guilty conscience to me.. go on, what have you bought?

If they rode nicely, were kind to their horse and were perfectly pleasant and polite to stewards and fellow competitors. I'd be more inclined to comment on how well they'd ridden or how smart they looked or what a lovely horse they had than judge them.

I have all the gear and anyone seeing me ride would know I have little idea

.

I don't care really. As others say, so long as they're good to their horses then that's all that matters.

Reminds me of someone asking if people who are 'only jump two foot courses should have proper jumping saddles'... Why the heck not?

It does depend on the circumstances! If they had terrible hands, poor balance and their horse looked extremely unhappy but were decked out in all the latest gear, I might wonder whether they were better spending their cash on a few lessons instead!

I just love the phrase 'all the gear no idea', conjures up images of Katie Price! I don't think I'd judge - just be incredibly jealous that I was there in my second hand bits!

Ah i've been rumbled- yes kerilli you're right, it's me with all the gear and no idea

my mum bought me a set of BEAUTIFUL tendon boots for my birthday, and i was going to use them for my unaff 2'9 ODE but (after a semi argument with mother, and me having a really horrible moral debate with myself about whether it's right for me to have such unnecessary stuff, resulting in me signing up to donate to 2 more charities a month
blush.gif
) suddenly thought- oh dear, i may look really stupid and ponyclubbrattish
blush.gif
i am on a very smart TB bred for eventing (not actually mine, on loan from a professional friend til i find my own) with a very smart jumping saddle (also on loan from another friend
blush.gif
) and these beautiful boots, but it is highly unlikely i will even get through the showjumping without some catastrophic mistake on my part (and believe me golddustsara, up until ths summer, i have rocked up to events entirely in second hand on an over excited 16.3 ex-eventer who tramples people and ponies in the warm up, then gets eliminated at fence 2

)

Sorry for my mini meltdown

I need to be more confident like you all and just ignore mean people, and enjoy myself and my pone- that's why i'm doing it after all!!

You go girl

I rock up and down the lanes on my well bred DW flashy chestnut mare
grin.gif
. We have the tack, the boots, and Me! It really doesn't matter
grin.gif
. Just have fun and enjoy your nice things
grin.gif
.

My nice Tri Zone boots are all muddy. My expensive saddle doesn't fit my horse (oh roll on saddle fitting day). And my big fat legs don't fit into any nice boots at all. A good friend was BSJA-ing in a dressage saddle. Just enjoy hun!

I have always wanted to be as well turned out as poss when I go out and yes I do buy lovely gear for my nag rather than myself (with the exception of riding kit!) ...and I only have a little bit of an idea.

Like the others say - just enjoy it and it doesn't matter what complete strangers think of you...they don't know you and the people who do know you won't judge.

Well, when I win the Euromillions on Friday, I will still be taking my old racehorse to the local show, because I love him, and winning £85M won't make me capable of going round Burghley.

If anyone wishes to judge me for turning up in a brand new Lehel horsebox, wearing a complete new set of the blingiest gear I can find, well all the best to them!!

Sometimes........

But not too openly....... and probably largely due to my own envy.

Do get a bit tired of turning up to dressage competitions riding a riding school nag, in need of a clip with mis matched scuffed tack, riding my guts out, little cob performing its heart out and then being marked lower than some overhorsed kid on a flashy warmblood with a posh dressage saddle that can't even keep her hands still, never mind her lower leg......... Frustrates me that judges are often dazzled by pretty/flashy horses with a big action when less impressive horses are often performing more "correctly".

There are sadly rather too many people out there who would be better spending a bit more money on a few more lessons rather than on a flashy horse, or fancy tack.

I can see when someone is just having a bad day or riding a difficult/young horse and that is different.
