So wraps are useless....I saw on google and old post about using men's socks?

How dirty and wet do they get in muddy conditions?
Horse has a split in hoof that won't grow out (bad pedal bone rotation that has left a gap between lammae and hoof wall) he is turned out In his booties and ridden in them.

I want to keep that area as clean as poss at prevent abscesses recurring.

I did find these too but am not sure if they would be suitable.....

As I don't want to cause more problems.

Thankies.

Honestly, I have no answer for you - sorry :(. However I can only give you my opinion based on small animal. We would recommend that a sock be put over a dressing on the foot to protect it. However, if the weather was wet, muddy etc it was recommended that a bag or two- preferably a poop sack etc be placed over as waterproof

So, IMO I would say the sick wouldn't work unless dry as it'll sick through and you'll need something more waterproof

But I could be completely wrong and all I've really done is bump up your post :D

Footskins are brill. They're jus like a big latex sock. The only thing is they're quite delicate so could possibly puncture if the hoof boot rubbed. But I think definitely worth a try. I use them when poulticing but stick a pad of old car inner tube over the sole and gaffer tape it on

I use socks on both my horses when they wear boots instead of pastern wraps which I never could get on with.

They do get wet / muddy when going through wet or muddy ground.

Not sure what to suggest as I only use socks to prevent any rubbing and have never had any problems with them even when they got damp.

Okay thanks.....I've sent a link if the foot skins to my farrier.

We are happy with him in booties it's just this small thing that is annoying me. Am going to get him some socks any way as brother finds it hard with his fingers to do up the wraps.

What type would you recommend?

Ones with plenty of give around the cuff to get them over the hoof! Personally I use mens socks, either woolen or sports type socks. I think some people use hiking socks, I just go for cheap ones as I find they get worn thin quickly.

There is a bit of a knack to cleaning the hoof, getting the sock on and then the boot on all with their leg in the air but once you get the hang of it it's quite easy :)
