Question on turnout for Spanish ponies

I realise this is quite a specific question, so I'm not expecting too many replies. But I'm hopeful that someone might as I know a few of you own Spanish ponies.

I have a Spanish mare that is a riding horse. I want to eventually do BD but for now odd bit of showing, RC stuff and low level unaff dressage. Therefore what do you think is the best turnout: hogged mane (like they do with broodmares), short dressage like mane, long iberian mane (that can be plaited in a ruining plait).

All thoughts welcome

Not very helpful but the Lippi I shared had a beautifully matted brown mane... for all of 30 seconds after washing it would turn white and have no tangles, but she wasn't very happy with that. She once had it hogged (a result of finding oil to coat it in).

I personally didn't like the hogging, I think very few horses get away with it. And would say the Iberian... I hope you have a horse less keen on mud!

Well, Spanish dressage riders on PREs have long flowing manes and tails. I have seen a lot of ridden horses in Andalusia and never seen a hogged mare ridden (in fact, barely ever any mare ridden - strange.) The brood mares I've seen in in-hand PRE breed classes have shaved tails as well as hogged manes and that's not a look that I think would suit show classes in this country. But I'm no expert, I've just seen a lot of PREs on their home turf.
 
My friend has 2 PRE's, she keeps their manes long, but when showing or doing BD she puts them in a running plait - its essential to keep the plait tight and along the top of the neck though!

Hogging is something I got very used to on PRE's when grooming for my friend at the BAPSH championship show the past couple of years.

Generally mares arent ridden at all in spain, they are kept hogged with shaved tails too (youngsters have their whole tails shaved off & manes hogged) - It really does highlight the shape, and i did come to like the look - although i'd never have the nerve to do it to my own horse if i did have a PRE!!
 
I think the last 2 posts have hit the nail on the head - as the Spanish don't ride the mares, I've had difficulty deciding what to do.

At present she has a long mane and I can do a very good running plait. However, now she's older and I'm going to be taking her out more I've struggled deciding on what would be best.

I have a p/b Luso, his flowing mane and forelock are his crowning glory!!!! Personally I think a hog looks rather odd unless it is on a cob then it looks smart! I do unaffiliated dressage and veteran classes with his mane lose, I use mane and tail conditioner on it and it stays tangle free also I daily tease any tangles out with my fingers. Each to their own, there is no hard and fast rule
 
I have Andalusian gelding and for us, it's running plait all the way! Couldn't bare hogging his luscious locks!
 
I personally prefer the long mane. We had our spanish broodmares hogged when they arrived to us, we let all 3 of their manes grow long. 1 looked horrific as it didn't grow thick so we rehogged her, the 2nd looked much better, but then rubbed a huge chunk out, and the 3rd looks great and competes dressage with it in a runnign plait.
Both of our PRE stallions are competed long manes and running plaits, did try 1 of them with buns, but really didn't suit with the big stallion crest.

I have two PRE mares - one has beautiful long locks (although looking slightly manky at the moment as they live out 24/7). The other was a brood mare at a stud before coming to me, and so had her mane hogged - couldn't wait to grow it out, and now it's starting to look really good.

Personally, I think a running plait looks lovely, and shows the neck off beautifully.

For me, the long mane was one of the factors that attracted me to the breed (along with intelligence, great work ethic, presence, nobility.......... need I go on?);)
 
I have two PRE mares, running plait for one, as she has a fairly fine textured mane, the other has very thick and long mane, so i am going to pull it to thin it out, but keep it long.
