Evening guys,

My contact for my super cheap shavings is now not doing them anymore, so following lots of research etc and reading all about wood pellets on the forum, we have decidedto buy a pallet of wood pellets, not sure on LWP or Five star as yet...however my question is i understand they come on a pallet but is the lorry that brings them a massive hgv lorry or a smaller non hgv type lorry. Might sound a really dump question its just our access to the yard is a double gate but we have a small bendy lane down to the yard.

Just worrying on how to get them down to the yard. Also can you store them outside, are they in plastic bags?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for reading.

When you order them just explain the situation to the company, they will put a note on their system. We have this problem as large lorries can't get up the drive, has to be a shorter 7.5t. Some companies will also check on google street view to see what its like! Also enquire how they will be dropped off, insist that curbside delivary is not enough and check they will at least be using a palletiser. They come in plastic bags but you will probs want to cover them as well as you really don't want them to get wet.

The lorry they come on will probably be reasonably big. but if you're concerned you can ring the the company and ask what vehicles are used by them/the logistics company they use. The vehicle will bring a forklift with it though so they can unload somewhere near and move the pallet to where you want it. The wood pellets will come in bags and the whole pallet will be wrapped around the sides with a cling-film type material. However, the bags will often be pierced by the company when stacking so you're best to throw a tarpaulin over the top if you are going to keep them outside. :)

I've ordered from Verdo and Five Star, unfortunately requesting a 7.5 ton doesn't guarantee you'll get one. Verdo arrived on a huge lorry despite requesting a 7.5 ton and Five Star arrived without a pallet truck to get them off the lorry.

Definitely cover them, if you store them outside and there is a rip in one of the bags you'll end up with soggy bedding when it rains! Brilliant stuff though. :)

ETA - Verdo only had a hand pallet trolley too, not the easiest for moving a ton of bedding across a farmyard! I had to shift it by hand in the end.

i told them its hard to get a 7,5 lorry up drive with both LWP and 5 star and both sent the 7,5 and its a big lorry. Its the only one 5 star and LWP have. so i got them to drop it at my house now and i take 10 bags twice a day to yard. Both are not very good when it comes to dropping the pallet's off. I did say to them you need a smaller lorry not every yard is a long drive way. Mine was hard to get in as have to turn into it ,but there is a low tree so did not help , but did tell them.

O thanks so much guys. Will ask when i order, might have to keep them at the house and move them by hand and small tractor down to the yard! Glad they are good though. Thanks so much for all your responses xx

We had Five Star. My friend had a ton and I had half a ton at separate times on different deliveries. The track to the stables is quite twisty with an overhanging tree but the lovely driver cheerfully trundled the pallet with the aid of a fork lift from the road.
None of my friends or my bags were damaged and could have easily been stacked outside. They are of no interest to vermin and have not been attacked. The plastic is of good quality and not easily damaged. As you may have gathered I am a 5* fan.:)

I use lwp and they are really good and helpful. When you ring them just tell them what your enterance is like, how big/wide and they will sort you out. They have a little forklift in the lorry so they can get anywhere really. I have my pallets put in one of the spare stables next door to mine.

I use LWP, they deliver to local pallett delivery co who then deliver to us. I always request a small lorry, they always send an 18t one. They can just about get here.

A bin lorry can get to our house which is also 18t

five star gave me a choice, it came on a 7.5 ton, but you still cant turn from the road into my place (well you can if it's your own horse box and you reverse it in:rolleyes:)
I get them to unload from the road onto my drive, it's quiet enough to do (once a van driver was waiting and came and helped :D)
I then took them down myself. you could get a fair few in car and do a couple of trips.
the companies that came with a forklift could never use it at mine as its gravel.
it's worth the effort as you go through less and they are easier to lug around when you need them .
I know you haven't asked and you haven't decided;I've had a pallet of LPW, a pallet of Verdo and 2 pallets of five star. verdo I hated, LPW are ok, five star I used 1/2 the amount and it was over all miles better. so I'm sticking with it
