A lady came into the yard a while ago because she wanted to hire the sand school. At that time it wasn't possible because it was being topped up, so was temporarily out of action. Another lady now wants to use it and I just need to know the implications of saying 'yes' (I've not actually given an answer yet).

Does it make a difference if you accept payment or not?
What insurance would be needed?
Have you had an arrangement that has worked well?
Have you had an arrangement that has ended badly?

You need to check your planning application, ours states that it is for personal use only. If you hire it out you would need insurance and would become liable for rates.

I have always let others use mine and it's at home so not a yard as such. Have no idea what my planning says - doubt very much anyone from the planning department would ever come up and check it out!
That said I guess it's only 2 or 3 times a month that other people use it. Only once had a problem when an acquaintance asked to hire it and turned up with 4 friends, so 5 horses! I charged her per horse as she was taking the p**s.
I do charge, £10 per hour per horse (but it's only a fiver for close friends). It's a lovely school that doesn't freeze or flood and peeps are welcome to use the jumps too.

It was built three owners ago. Can I find out online, do they keep records?

I'm quite tempted to say 'no', it's at my parent's house and not a livery yard.

Should b on ur local councils website, but could take a while to find! My planning says personal use only (school mot built Yet!), as do all the others on the lane, but I know a few let friends use them. I'm hoping to befriend sum and use a school until mine us built, happy to pay or return favour!
