I don't know where I heard this, but are the tops of carrots (ie the leaves and black stem that is in the top) bad for horses?

Also, what is the safest way to cut carrots up for horses? Lengthways into sticks or across into discs?

Never known the answer to these and it's really annoying me now!

Ive always fed them either whole or cut length ways (as discs or smaller chunks can lead to choke).

I dont think the black bit at the top is bad for them at all.. most people ive known over the years feed their horses carrots whole - never seen anyone deliberatly remove the end!

never heard bout tops being bad for them, tho i suppose if there are any pesticides or anything, they will be in the tops (thats wat my boyf always moans about anyway!)

and i always been taught to cut into strips. as rounds can get stuck in the throat. altho my horse eats apples whole off the tree, so if anyone was goin to choke it would be her!

Someone once told me that the tops should not be eaten by horses, don't believe it personally.

I also had a nutritionist tell me you should never feed them greens, such as cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce!

When we visited a racing yard in Lambourn they were grating the carrots! I just cut mine length ways.

I've gratted carrots before now to tempt a fussy feeder! I know someone who invested in an electronic gratter - their horse was phenominally fussy and gratted carrots and apple was the only way to get him to eat!

Generally I feed them whole, but IF I cut them, then it's always lengthways!!
